Onomatopoeia
Personification
Oxymoron

assassinated
killed
Objective
:
At the end of the session, I will be able to:
Formal
Informal
Colloquial
Slang
1. Formal
It makes use of third person
pronouns such us he, she, it,
they, and them. Contracting
words are not allowed in this
style of writing.
• you should avoid contractions
(isn’t, don’t) and
colloquialisms (slang). It’s
also important to make sure
that your grammar and word
usage are “textbook” correct,
since mistakes in this
category can make your work
look sloppy or careless.
Example:
Frontliners are the people who selflessly
and dedicatedly serve during this era
of pandemic. They are the doctors,
nurses, and other health practitioners
who try to save the lives of the
patients notwithstanding the threat
that they could also be infected.
2. Informal
The informal diction uses
the first person pronouns
such as I, we, and us. It
also allows the use of
contractions like it’s,
you’re, they’re, etc.
Informal diction is
sometimes referred to
as “vernacular,” which
means “everyday
speech.”
Example:
I want to shout out
to my friends who
passed the
examination.
3. Colloquial
• It is the use of familiar and casual words in
conversation in a relaxed from of language.
• Colloquialism is the use of everyday language
in writing, including idioms, profanities, regional
expressions, and nonstandard grammar. This
can make a story, particularly dialogue, seem
truer to life.
Example:
They ain’t nothing to say. (Ain’t
means “is not, am not, are not,
has not and have not”. Other
examples are y’all, gonna,
wanna, etc.
4. Slang
• It is classified as very informal form of
language. Slang words have another meaning
which are used by a certain group.
• Slang words are casual terms or phrases that
develop within a group or community. Slang is most
common in verbal speech, though writers do
incorporate it into dialogue, and narration more
rarely, to reflect a character’s cultural context and
personality.
Example:
• That performance was epic.
(Epic means highly enjoyable.)
• Enjoy your camping at
Sanchez peak. YOLO! (YOLO
means “you only live once.”)
QUIZ: Identify the type of diction used
by the author in each of the statements
1. “The concern will be addressed right away.”
2. “I got it.”
3. “She’s fixin’ to go to the store sometime
soon.”
4. “She’s getting ready to go to the store soon.”
5. “Let’s take a groufie.”
6. ILYSM that I can’t live without you.
