LET’S UNDERSTAND!!!
WHAT ARE FOSSIL FUELS?
Coal, crude oil, and natural gas are all considered as fossil fuels
because they were formed from the fossilized, buried remains
of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Because
of their origins, fossil fuels have a high carbon content.
TYPES OF FOSSIL FUELS
There are three type of fossil fuels.

Oil

Gas

Coal
WHAT IS COAL?
Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock,
formed as rock strata called coal seams. Coal is mostly carbon
with variable amounts of other elements; chiefly hydrogen,
sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.
USES OF COAL
Electricity Generation. Power generation is the primary use for coal
worldwide.
Metal Production. Metallurgical (coking) coal is a key ingredient in
steelmaking.
Cement Production. Coal is used as a key energy source in
cement production.
Gasification and Liquefaction.
Chemical Production.
Other Industries.
WHAT IS OIL?
An oil is any nonpolar chemical
substance ,crude oil,
liquid petroleum that is found
accumulated in various porous rock
formations in Earth’s crust and is
extracted for burning as fuel or for
processing into chemical products.
USES OF OIL
We use petroleum products to propel vehicles, to heat
buildings, and to produce electricity. In the industrial sector,
the petrochemical industry uses petroleum as a raw material to
make products such as plastics, polyurethane, solvents, and
hundreds of other intermediate and end-user goods.
WHAT IS GAS?
•Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter. A pure
gas may be made up of individual atoms, elemental molecules
made from one type of atom, or compound molecules made from
a variety of atoms. A gas mixture, such as air, contains a
variety of pure gases.
USES OF GAS
Heating and cooling. In the commercial and residential sectors,
gas is mainly used for space heating and cooling, water heating,
and cooking.

Power generation. Power plants can use gas to generate

electricity.

Transport.
