What are cyclones ?

A cyclone is a large air mass that rotates around a strong center of

low atmospheric pressure, counterclockwise in the Northern
Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere as viewed
from above (opposite to an anticyclone). Cyclones are
characterized by inward-spiraling winds that rotate about a zone
of low pressure. The largest low-pressure systems are polar
vortices and extratropical cyclones of the largest scale
(the synoptic scale). Warm-core cyclones such as tropical
cyclones and subtropical cyclones also lie within the synoptic
scale. Mesocyclones, tornadoes, and dust devils lie within
smaller mesoscale. Upper level cyclones can exist without the
presence of a surface low, and can pinch off from the base of
the tropical upper tropospheric trough during the summer months
in the Northern Hemisphere. Cyclones have also been seen on
extraterrestrial planets, such as Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune.
What are different types of cyclones
and their causes ?

• Tropical cyclones are what most people are familiar

with because these are cyclones that occur over
tropical ocean regions. Hurricanes and typhoons are
actually types of tropical cyclones, but they have
different names so that it's clear where that storm is
occurring. Hurricanes are found in the Atlantic and
Northeast Pacific, typhoons are found in the
Northwest Pacific. If you hear 'tropical cyclone,' you
should assume that it's occurring in the South Pacific
or Indian Ocean, but for this lesson, we'll use it refer to
all types of tropical ocean cyclones.
• Polar cyclones are cyclones that occur in polar
regions like Greenland, Siberia and Antarctica.
Unlike tropical cyclones, polar cyclones are usually
stronger in winter months. As you can see, these
storms really do prefer the colder weather! They
also occur in areas that aren't very populated, so any
damage they do is usually pretty minimal.
• A mesocyclone is when part of a thunderstorm cloud
starts to spin, which may eventually lead to a tornado.
'Meso' means 'middle', so you can think of this as the
mid-point between one type of storm and the other.
Tornadoes all come from thunderstorm clouds, but
not all thunderstorm clouds make tornadoes. In order
for a tornado to occur, part of that cloud has to spin,
and though you can't really see this happening, this is
the intermediate, or 'meso' step from regular cloud to
dangerous spinning cloud running along the ground.
States in India that are prone to
cyclones ---
Steps to be taken prior to cyclones
and after cyclones---

Here are some precautions of cyclone one should

follow to stay prepared for the disaster -
• Ensure good condition of your house so that it can
withstand strong winds.
• Trim down trees to make sure they do not fall over
telephone or electricity lines during the storm.
• Keep your mobile phone fully charged and other
appliances like torches handy as there may be
power cuts during a cyclone.
• Prepare an emergency first-aid kit.
• Store water because the water supply may be
disrupted during cyclones.
• Apart from the above cyclone precautions, one
should avoid some factors at any cost while
preparing for a storm. They are as follows:
• Do not leave any loose sharp objects lying around
your property, as they can injure people during
gusty winds.
• It is vital to steer clear cyclones.
Given below is a list of safety measures to be taken during a
cyclone -
• Be aware of the official cyclone warning by listening to the
radio or other authentic sources.
• Install storm shutters or board up glass windows.
• Keep all the doors and windows closed.
• Take proper care of adults or children who need attention.
• Switch off the electrical mains in your house.
• Park your vehicles beneath a solid shelter with a hand
brake or in gear to guard them.
What are the best practices followed
by Orissa to overcome cyclones ?

• In 1999, there were just 23 permanent cyclone

shelters in 6 coastal districts that could accommodate
about 30,000 people. But learning from its failures,
Orissa has built a network of such shelters along the
coastline. "Orissa has a great community outreach
system through which people are being reached on
time.
