written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’ What is Lent? The season of Lent is a Catholic liturgical season consisting of forty days of fasting, prayer, and penitence. Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches on the previous year's Palm Sunday, and it concludes at sundown on Holy Thursday. The official liturgical color for the season of Lent is violet/Purple. Lent is marked by a time of prayer and preparation to celebrate Easter. Sundays that occur during Lent are not counted as part of the 40 days of Lent, and are referred to as the Sundays in Lent. It is forty days of prayer and sacrifices in preparation for the celebration of Easter. It recalls the forty days of prayer and fasting of Jesus before his public ministry. In Filipino language we call it Kuwaresma meaning forty days of prayer and sacrifice WHAT IS EASTER? Word of God Matthew 28:1 – 10 “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” EASTER SEASON Easter Season culminates the Paschal Mystery- passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, where Jesus overcomes sin and death . The liturgical color for Easter season is white or gold meaning joy and triumph. It is actually a seven-week season of the church year called Eastertide, the Great Fifty Days that begins at sundown the evening before Easter Sunday (the Easter Vigil) and lasts for six more Sundays until Pentecost Sunday. AS ST. PAUL SAID…
“If Christ was not
raised, our faith is worthless” How do we observe Lent & Easter? Lent is a time when we examine our relationship with God and with others so that we may be more forgiving and kind. All Catholics have to fast and abstain from meat on certain days. Fasting and abstinence are forms of sacrifice. Fasting means to limit food to one full meal a day with the possibility of two smaller meals. Those who fast are Christians who are 18 – 60 years old. Those who are sick are exempted from this form of sacrifice. Abstinence means not eating meat, although fish is allowed. They can fast and abstain in other forms as their sacrifice. Those who abstain are Christians who are 18 – 60 years old. The challenge today is not accepting Christ’s resurrection, but in living out the good news of the risen Christ, the source of the new life for all, to have a life centered to Jesus Christ and follow his teachings in our daily lives. In our daily lives, we should be nourished by the sacraments, exercise our loving service to others and follow Jesus’ commandment to all of us. As Jesus said… “Love one another as I have loved you”, “Whatever you did to the least of my brethren you did to me” How do we celebrate Lent & Easter? The journey through Lent is a way to place ourselves before God humbly, bringing in our hands no price whereby we can ourselves obtain our salvation. PALM SUNDAY The celebration of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem before he was arrested. In Scripture, people placed palm branches on the road as Jesus road on a donkey into Jerusalem. Marks the beginning of Holy Week. EASTER TRIDUUM
The “Great Three Days” -the three-
part celebration of the Paschal Mystery of Jesus (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Black Saturday). Begins on the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and re- enacts the washing of the disciples’ feet that shows service and humility to others on Celebration of the Lord’s Passion and suffering Holy Saturday Our celebration starts from midnight of Holy Saturday which we call Easter vigil. During this night Christians gather to give meaning and expression to Christ’s coming to life and overcoming death. It is the beginning of the Easter Season. EASTER VIGIL Another significant event during Easter season is the “Salubong”, which dramatizes the meeting of the Risen Christ with the Blessed Virgin Mary, his mother and we see how Mary’s sorrow turned into joy. SALUBONG To keep alive and present this greatest act of love of our savior, we are all called to make Sunday Holy through the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, since Sunday is the Lord’s Day. Act of Contrition My God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because I offended You, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen St. Scholastica and St. Benedict…
