Health Center
Objectives

At the end of the session, participants will be

able to:
• discuss the basic elements of electricity
• describe typical cases of electric shock
accidents
• articulate effects of electric current to the human
body
• explain means of preventing electric shock

2
Electrical Safety
Elements of Electricity

• Voltage – potential difference between 2

conductors.
• Current - measure (in ampere) of electrons
flowing through conductive material.
• Resistance - a device which limits the
flow of current (measured in ohms).

OHM’S Law
Voltage
Current = -----------------
Resistance

By corresponding units of measure:

Volts
Ampere = -----------------
Ohms

6
Electrical Safety
Factors Affecting Electric Shock

• Quantity of current
• Path of current
• Length of time the victim’s body is in the
circuit
• Type of electric energy involved

7
Electrical Safety
Effects of Electric Current to the
Body
• Perception current
• Let go current
• Ventricular fibrillation current

8
Electrical Safety
Causes of Electrical Fire

• Arcs
• Sparks
• Overheating

9
Electrical Safety
Electric Shock Prevention

• Grounding System
• Double Insulating Materials
• Appropriate Disconnecting Means
• Electric Hand Tools

Electrical Safety
Simple Rules When Working
With Electricity
• Always assume that a circuit is energized
• Use the appropriate instrument for testing
circuits
• Use protective devices
• Use personal protective equipment
• Use insulated tools and the like
• Use warning signs and isolate dangerous
areas

Electrical Safety
Simple Rules When Working
With Electricity
• Observe proper maintenance schedules of
electrical equipment, loads and wires
• Regular electrical inspections should be
conducted on the electric circuit
• Only qualified personnel should work on
any part of an electrical circuit or
equipment/apparatus
• Always replace a fuse with the same kind
and rating
12
Electrical Safety
Simple Rules When Working
With Electricity
• When working with any part of electrical
circuit make sure that there is someone to
look after you
• Observe lock-out/tag-out (LOTO)
• When installing temporary electrical
installations, make sure that they will not
create any new hazard
• Adhere to strictly established regulations
of the Philippine Electrical Code
• Never work alone on any electrical works
