LEARNING OUTCOMES
 Apply basic engineering models for wind speed and
determine the annual energy production for a wind
turbine
 Analyse measured wind data and determine the mean
wind speed and turbulence
 Perform simple calculations for assessing wind farm
projects and for calculating the cost of energy from wind
 Account for the configuration and energy production of
different wind turbine designs
 Carry out calculations of thrust and power for a wind
turbine
 Calculate the mass of a turbine blade based on different
material’s properties
 Define boundary conditions and loads on beams and
calculate reactions and internal forces
 Apply a strategy for controlling the rotor speed of a
variable speed wind turbine.

WIND ENERGY
Wind power or wind energy describes the
process by which the wind is used to generate
mechanical power or electricity.

Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy in the

wind into mechanical power.

This mechanical power can be used for

specific tasks (such as grinding grain or
pumping water), or can be converted into
electricity by a generator.

HISTORY OF
WIND MILLS
The first recording of a windmill came from a
Hindu book dating back to about 400 B.C.E.
Scientists believe that the first windmills created
to do work were created in China 2000 years
ago. There is no written history of this however.
The first recorded windmills that were created to
do work are from seventh-century Persia.
The first historical reference to Chinese windmills
was in 1219. This is significant because during
this time windmills were used along the coast of
china for wind power.
Some windmills are still intact in Iranand
Afghanistan from the 7th century.

PROS AND CONS OF WIND ENERGY:

Pros of Wind Energy Cons of Wind Energy

• Wind is a domestic source of energy. • Installation can take up a significant portion of land

• It's sustainable. • Wind turbines can be a safety hazard

• Wind turbines can be built on existing farms or • Wind turbines are suited to a particular region
ranches.
• The wind is inconsistent
• Wind power is cost-effective
• Wind turbines involve high upfront capital
• Wind creates jobs. investment
• Wind enables industry growth and competitiveness. • Wind turbines have a visual impact
• It's a clean fuel source. • May reduce the local bird population
• Huge Market Potential • Wind turbines are prone to noise disturbances

WIND MILLS
Windmill, device for tapping the energy of the
wind by means of sails mounted on a rotating
shaft.

The sails are mounted at an angle or are given a

slight twist so that the force of wind against them
is divided into two components, one of which, in
the plane of the sails, imparts rotation.

A windmill is defined as a machine that converts

the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical
energy. All the blades of windmill always rotate in
a clockwise direction.

The first windmill was designed in the year 1854

by Daniel Halladay from the United States.

TYPES OF
WINDMILLS
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines:
•Generates power independent of wind direction
•Low cost
•Strong tower not needed since generator is on
the ground

Characteristics:
•Low efficiency (only one blade works at a
time)
•May need wires to support
•More turbulent flow near ground

TYPES OF
WINDMILLS
Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines:

•Tall towers enable accessing stronger winds

•Blades capture wind energy throughout rotation

Characteristics:
•Strong and huge towers required

•Complexity during construction

•Need to be turned to face the wind

POWER
CALCULATION
OF WIND MILLS

Where:

•P = Power output, kilowatts

•Cp = Maximum power coefficient, ranging from 0.25 to

0.45, dimension less (theoretical maximum = 0.59)

•ρ = Air density, lb/ft3

•A = Rotor swept area, ft2 or π D2/4 (D is the rotor

diameter in ft, π = 3.1416)

•V = Wind speed, mph

•k = 0.000133  A constant to yield power in kilowatts.

WIND POWER
Wind power or wind energy is the use of wind to
provide mechanical power through wind turbines to
turn electric generators for electrical power. Wind
power is a popular sustainable,
renewable energy source that has a much smaller
impact on the environment compared to burning fossil
fuels.

P=⅛ ρD²C³

• P=power

• ρ=Density of air(kg/m³)

• D=Rotor diameter

• C=Incomming wind velocity(m/s)

WIND MILLS
LOCATION
•Close distance from utility line or
consumers.

•Prevailing wind direction.

•Surface roughness.

•High average annual wind speed.

•Low cost of construction.

HAWT
CONSTRUCTIO
N ROTOR
• Blades are connected to a hub, which is
connected to a shaft.

• Rotational speed will depend on blade

geometry, number of blades, and wind speed
(40 to 400)revolutions per minute typical
speed range).

• Gear box needed to increase speed to 1200-

1800 RPM for generator

PRODUCTION
AND USAGE
• A single 1MW windmill turbine operating at
a 45% production rate will generate about
3.9 million kW of electricity in a year. This
would be enough to meet the needs of
about 500 households per year.

• A wind farm will consist of anywhere from

12 to 100 of these 1MW windmills.

CONCLUSION

• Every wind turbine lasts for about 20-25 years. As long as the wind blows, wind turbines can harness the wind to create
power. Wind power only makes up a tiny percent of electricity that is produced.

• Unlike coal, wind turbines don't create greenhouse gases and are completely renewable source.

• Many people believe that the wind energy could soon be our main source of energy. Though wind turbines can cause
complaints and fatalities of wildlife, it could be the energy solution we have been looking for.

• Wind energy is probably the solution for our energy demands.

• It has great potential and is easy to manage. All you have to do is build the turbine and everything else is going to be free.
With only 1 turbine, you can power over 200 homes.
