CLIMATE TYPES ON

EARTH
Presented by: Angelica D. Acerit and Rovalyn Joy B. Aglugub
• Climate - is the average weather conditions in a place
over a long period of time - 30 years or more.
• is the long term pattern of weather in a particular area.
• the average course or condition of the weather at a place
usually over a period of years are exhibited by
temperature, wind, velocity and precipitation.
• What are the major climate zones?
• Earth climate zones- the horizontal belts of different
climates that encircle the planet consist of
tropical,dry,temperate,continetal and polar zones.

The Main Climate Zones

1. Tropical - climate zones lie near the equator and have
continually high temperatures and high precipitation. The
areas with tropical climate are most found in Soudern Asia
and West Africa.
There are three types of Tropical climate

a. TROPICAL WET - Here the climate remains warm, but

there is regular rainfall.

b. TROPICAL MONSOON CLIMATE- The annual rainfall in

areas with a Tropical Monsoon Climate is simillar to that of
Tropical Wet Climate.
c. TROPICAL WET AND DRY - Climate in this case, is
usually mild to hot. Temperatures vary moderately. An
extended dry season observed during the winter.

- It is also known as TROPICAL SAVANNAH.

2. Dry Climate - climate zones experience high
temperatures year- round, but little annual precipitation.

There are two kinds of Dry Climate

a. ARID- in areas with an arid climate, summers are hot,
and winters are cool or warm. Rainfall is low.

b. SEMIARID- The climate is hot, but it is more moderate

than the arid climate. This kind of climate usually falls
between an arid climate and tropical climate.
3. Temperate climates - exist in Earth’s middle latitudes and
are influenced by both land and water that surrounds them.
Temperate zones include the continental U.S most of
Canada and Europe, Central Asia, Southern South America
and Southern Australia.

There three kinds of Temperate climate

a. HUMID SUBTROPICAL- Precipitation is between 30 and
65 inches, and the average temperature is 70 degrees.
Humid subtropical often has hurricanes and tornadoes.
b. MEDITERRANEAN- Named after the Mediterranean
Sea.This drier climate has long, warm summers and short,
mild, rainy winters.

c. MARINE WEST COAST- This climate region is usually

foggy, cloudy, and damp. It has short summers and long,
wet, cool winters.

4. Continental Climate- also exist in the mid-latitudes,but as

the name implies they’re generally found at the interiors of
large landmasses. Includes North America, Central
Russia,and Siberia.
There are two kinds of Continental Climate

a. HUMID CONTINENTAL - The regions with humid

continental climate have moderate to hot summers and cold
winters.

b. SUBARCTIC - This climate has cool summers, and

winters are cold. Maximum rainfall occurs during the
summer months.
5. Polar climate - zones are too harsh to support vegetation
both winters and summers are very cold. Includes the
North pole and the South Pole.

There are two types of Polar Climate

a. Tundra- This climate is dry, the soil remains frozen
permanently as permafrost and can be hundreds of meters
deep.
b. ICECAP- Is the coldest weather on earth, and has
temperatues that are rarely below freezing point. Here the
surface mostly remains covered in snow or ice permanently
.
HIGH LAND CLIMATE

- Sometimes this climate is included in the polar climate ,

but consider it is an individual climate .
in 1948, American climatologist Charles Thornthwaite
developed a climate clasification system that scietist still
used today.

Climatogist - who studies weather patterns over a period of

time.
