MANUAL LIQUID

LIMIT DEVICE
(CASAGRANDE)

It is used to determine the moisture content at which

clay soils pass from plastic to liquid state.

The Device consists of an adjustable crank and cam

mechanism, a blow counter and a removable brass cup
fitted on the base.
LINEAR SHRINKAGE
MOULD

A simple mould which is filled with the soil under test. This
is then dried and the resulting decrease of length of the
specimen measured is expressed as the linear shrinkage.

It is used for the determination of the total linear shrinkage of

soils, and indicates the plastic properties of soils with low
clay content.
SHRINKAGE The shrinkage Limit Test is one of the Atterberg Limits methods of
defining characteristics of cohesive soils. The shrinkage limit of
cohesive soils is defined as the water content at which further loss of

LIMIT TEST SETS moisture will not cause a decrease in volume.

The shrinkage limit test is useful in obtaining a quantitative indication of

how much volume change can occur with changes in the water content.

The Shrinkage Limit Test Set is supplied complete with;

• Prong Plate
• Moisture Content Tin with Lid, aluminum, Ø:45 mm h:10 mm, 2
pcs.
• Moisture Content Tin with Lid, aluminum, Ø:55 mm h:35 mm
• Porcelain Dish, 120mm dia.
• Spatula, 120 mm
• Graduated Glass Cylinder, 25 ml,
• Carrying Case
PLASTIC LIMIT
TEST SET
Plastic Limit (PL) is the water content at the change
from a plastic to a semi-solid state. This test involves
repeatedly rolling a soil sample into a thread until it
reaches a point where it crumbles.

The Plastic Limit Test Set is supplied complete with:

• Glass Plate, 300x300x5 mm

• Steel Reference Rod
• Moisture Content Tins, Ø:75 mm h:30, 6 pcs.
• Porcelain Mixing Dish, 120 mm dia.
• Spatula, 120mm
• Carrying Case
SEMI-AUTOMATIC consists of a frame with a levelling screws and screw gear

PENETROMETER FOR assembly with handwheel for vertical adjustment, a digital

penetration measurement gauge with 0.01 mm
resolution/readibility, a digital timer, a magnifying lens and a
LIQUID LIMIT low voltage illuminator mounted on flexible arms.

The penetrometer comes complete with a digital 99 second

timer. The timer has a standard setting of a 5 second free-
fall time, however it can be changed for customized tests if
required. When engaged, the timer will allow the needle to
free fall into the sample for the specific time interval and
then lock the needle from advancing while providing a
direct reading of the test results.
SOIL COMPACTION
TESTING EQUIPMENT
For soil compaction testing, moulds and hammers are used
to determine the connection between compacted soil's
density and moisture content.
COMPACTION MOULDS
AND COMPACTION
HAMMERS

Compaction moulds are made of plated steel and are

supplied complete with a collar, mould body and base
plate.

Rammers are made of plated steel and are used to

compact the soil sample in the compaction mould.
AUTOMATIC SOIL
COMPACTOR
The Automatic Soil Compactor is designed to compact soil specimens
automatically and uniformly, assuring conformity with local and
international standards.

The design principle is to allow the hammer to drop the required height
into the soil in the mould, which rotates circularly to distribute the blows
uniformly over the surface of the specimen in the mould.
SOIL PENETROMETER
It is used for determining the moisture-penetration
resistance relation of fine-grained soils. The apparatus is
supplied complete with a spring loading device that is
graduated from 10-150 lbf in 2 lbf subdivisions.
FRONT LOADING
OEDOMETER

The frame is designed to load the specimen through a lever The beam is fitted with a counter balance weight and beam
arm assembly and one of three alternative beam ratios as support jack. The cell platform is compatible with the full
9:1, 10:1 and 11:1. range of UTEST consolidation cells and is fitted with a
central spigot to ensure accurate centering of the cell under
the loading.
TEST
METHOD

Tests are performed on specimens prepared from undisturbed

samples or compacted disturbed samples. The user is able to
estimate the behaviour of foundations under load with the data
collected from these tests. Classification data and a knowledge
of the soils loading history are also important in making these
estimates.
SYSTEM
COMPONENTS

• Consolidation cell
• Dial gauge
• Displacement transducer and data logger
• Bench
• Weights
• Apparatuses for the preparation of consolidation samples
• Calibration disc
SOIL MOISTURE CONTENT

UTS-0150 UNIVERSAL
MOISTURE TESTER (CARBIDE
METER)

The UTS-0150 Universal Moisture Tester (Carbide Meter)

uses the calcium carbide method to determine the moisture
content of soil. The soil sample is placed into the bottle with
the reagent. The water reacts with the calcium carbide and
develops a gas pressure, which is displayed on the manometer
and easily converted into percentage of moisture.
UTS-0270
HYDROMETER Hydrometer Test Set is used to measure the particle size distribution

TEST SET of very fine materials such as silt and clay. The hydrometer test
method uses a soil dispersion mixer, which operates at over 13,000
r.p.m. The mixer comes supplied with a dispersion cup, stirring
paddle, an automatic switch-on by positioning bowl and has a 100
W power consumption.

The Hydrometer Test Set is supplied complete with:

• Dispersion mixer
• Hydrometer bath
• Hydrometer, 151H, 1pc
• Sodium hexametaphosphate 1 kg
• Sedimentation cylinder, 1000 ml, 6 pcs
• Heater
• Circulation unit
• Rubber stopper for sedimentation cylinder
• Beaker, 600 cc
TRIAXIAL TEST
SYSTEMS

The UTEST Triaxial Test System provides automated triaxial

compression tests on cylindrical undisturbed and remoulded
soil samples. Unconsolidated undrained (UU), consolidated
drained (CD) and consolidated undrained (CU) compression
tests can be automatically run, controlled and reported using
this apparatus.
UNCONSOLIDATED
UNDRAINED (UU)
TEST

For the UU test, the specimens, which should be saturated Once the specimen is inside the triaxial cell, the cell
before the test, are exposed to a confining fluid pressure in pressure is increased to a predetermined value by rotating
a triaxial chamber. the knob, and the specimen is brought to failure by
increasing the vertical stress by applying a constant rate of
axial strain.
CONSOLIDATED UNDRAINED
(CU) TEST & CONSOLIDATED
DRAINED (CD) TEST

The consolidated undrained/drained triaxial compression tests

are generally conducted in several stages, which concern the
successive saturation, consolidation and shearing of each of
the three specimens.

To ensure that the pore fluid in the specimen does not contain
free air, it must be undergo saturation before any other testing
can occur.
MULTIPLEX
UNIVERSAL
ELECTROMECHANIC
TEST MACHINE

Multiplex Machine is used to make Uniaxial, CBR and

Marshall Tests. The machine is also capable of doing load
controlled tests. UTM-0108 Multiplex Machine is composed
by a robust and compact two column frame with adjustable
upper cross beam.
