“SIMPLE PAST TENSE”
AFFIRMATIVE FORM
1. REGULAR VERBS
We form the past tense of regular verbs by adding “ed” to their simple form of verb.
Example: walk
Irregular verbs
Simple present tense: Simple past tense:
eat  ate tell  told
I walk to school every day. I walked to school yesterday.
drink  drank see  saw
Rose walks to school every day. She walked to school last week.
have  had give  gave

2. IRREGULAR VERBS
write  wrote feel  felt
The past tense forms of irregular verbs must be memorized.
come  came begin  began
Simple present tense: Simple past tense:
speak  spoke sell  sold
I eat breakfast every day. I ate breakfast one day ago.
get  got know  knew
I teach class every day. I taught class last night.

“SIMPLE PAST TENSE”
NEGATIVE FORM
We form the negative of simple past tense by putting did not before the simple verb.
  Examples:

Affirmative: Negative:
NOTE:
 I walk to school every day.  I didn’t walk to school yesterday.
Negative contraction:
 He speaks English every week.  He didn’t speak English last week.

 She drank water this morning.  She didn’t drink water this morning.

QUESTIONS FORM
We form simple past tense questions by placing Did before the subject.
  Example: Question: Short answer:

 He lived alone.  Did he live alone?  Yes, he did. No, he didn’t


 You read a newspaper.  Did you read a newspaper?  Yes, I did. No, I didn’t
 I went shopping.  Did I go shopping?  Yes, you did No, you didn’t
