2.1 Psychology of Literature

By ‘psychology of literature’, we may mean the

psychological study of the writer, as the type and as an
individual, or the study of the creative process or the study of
the psychological types and laws present within works of
literature, or, finally, the effects of literature upon its readers
(audience psychology). (Wallek and Warren, 1942:75)
2.2 The Need Theory of
Personality

According to Murray (as cited in Schultz,

2005:202) Murray distinguished needs as one
of two types: Primary Needs (viscerogenic
need) and Secondary Needs (psychogenic
need).
2.2 The Need Theory of
Personality

In Murray’s opinion (as cited in Schultz,

2005:201) recognized 20 needs and called
them psychogenic needs. He has formulated
those for distinguishing the types of
psychogenic needs into five groups.

Ambition could be a desire or energy that's energetic to

induce what we need, such as the desire of somebody
who is extraordinary to realize something in his/her life
or do something to realize great objectives with his
wants at that point it is called ambition. Murray (1938)
states that ambition needs are related to the need for
achievement, exhibition, and recognition.

IV. Finding and Discussion

01 02
Finding Discussion
4.1 Finding

Based on the statement of the research question that has been

formulated in the first chapter, the writer finds 29 quotations
in the novel Necessary People by Anna Pitoniak.
4.2 Discussion

This subchapter is presented to answer the research question.

The first section discusses the ambition of Violet Trapp based
on three ambition need those, are: exhibition, recognition,
and achievement. The second section about how violet
achieves her ambition.
4.2.1 The Ambition of Violet Trapp

In this study, it is founding that the main character in the novel has
ambitions. The main character is Violet Trapp. She comes from a small
town in America, where her family is underprivileged. This condition
affects her personality, namely her ambition to succeed. She tries to
achieve her ambition because she wants to fill her psyche's
requirements. When she achieves her goal of being successful, she gets
satisfaction.

To get her ambition, Violet takes advantage of the opportunities that

exist, namely her friendship with Stella to open her way to the future.
Violet's ambition cause by her psychogenic need, especially the need
for exhibition, the need for achievement, and the need for recognition.
4.2.1.1 Need For Exhibition
1) "You ask a lot of questions," he said, serving himself more
lasagna.
"Sorry," I said.
“Just an observation, not an accusation,” he said. To Diane, he
cocked an eyebrow. “She’d be a good reporter, wouldn’t she?”
(Pitoniak, 2019:8)

2) “Remind me how long you’ve been here? Eliza squinted at me.

“A little over a year.”
“You’re a quick study.”
(Pitoniak, 2019:90)
4.2.1.2 Need For Achievement

1) I wound up as the go-between all day, bringing scribbled messages to the senior producer
when she was in meetings, relaying precise instructions back to the field producer. It was
such a scramble that when the editor was cutting the tape, the producer asked me to record
the scratch track, the narration that the reporter- who was en route back from the field-would
later replace with his voice. In the end, the interview was salvaged. Hours of frenzy were
distilled into a neat three-minute package in the C block.
After the broadcast, the senior producer thanked me and said, "It is Violet, right? Good work
today."
The next week, the job was mine.
(Pitoniak, 2019:25)

2) “Ginny,” Eliza said. “This is Violet Trapp, the young woman I was telling you about.
She’s our newest associate producer. Violet, this is Ginny Grass, president of KCN.”
“I’m- what?” I said.
“She just got promoted,” Eliza added. “Approximately five minutes ago.”
(Pitoniak, 2019:90)
4.2.1.3 Need For Recognition

1) A small part of my chest collapsed. A pinprick, air hissing out. Stella looked too amused
to offer clarification. "Violet Trapp," I said, keeping
my head high and voice steady. "We've met before. I'm an associate producer at Frontline.
"Oh!" Ginny said. "Of course. Of course, you look very familiar. but you two are friends?"
She touched Stella on the forearm. "What a small world."
(Pitoniak, 2019:107)

2) “I’m finally getting somewhere on that Medal of Honor story,” Jamie said.
“The guy whose brother defected to Russia?”
"Two brothers, working for two enemies. Can't you see the movie already?"
“This sounds interesting,” Stella said. “Can I come?”
“Sorry,” I said. “It’s for producers only.”
Her eyebrows arched. The hardness in my voice caught both of us by surprise.
(Pitoniak, 2019:119)
V. Conclusion and Suggestions

01 02
Conclusion Suggestions
5.1 Conclusion

After analyzing the ambition of Violet Trapp, it can conclude that

psychogenic needs as ambition exist in the main character in the
novel Necessary People that can prove through:
Violet Trapp was born with a bright brain and hardworking nature,
then this talent led her to ambition to make changes in her life,
namely success, which the writer then categorized as psychogenic
needs. Violet as the main character undergoes a process of evaluation
and morality based on existing data which the writer then categorized
into psychological problems in herself.
5.2 Suggestions

There are two suggestions from the writer. The first to use
the need theory of personality by another kind of analysis.
Second, the novel contains many aspects that can analyze
from various points of view by using another approach.
Hopefully, this study can be useful for future writers who
will come to consider and determine their study.
