it had held since 1885, was changed from the Union of
Burma to the Union of Myanmar.
The English name of the city that served as the
country’s capital from 1948 to 2006, Rangoon, also was
dropped in 1989 in favour of the common Burmese
name, Yangon.
In the Burmese language the country has been
known as Myanma (or, more precisely, Mranma Prañ)
since the 13th century.
Burmese is the official language of Myanmar
(since 1989, the name for Burma).
The government of Myanmar, as defined by the
Constitution of 2008, functions as a parliamentary

religious nature and was inscribed on stone.
The Myazedi Inscription is a four-sided stone
inscription executed in A.D.1113 by Prince Rajakumara. It
records the merit of the building of a pagoda in Bagan by
the prince for his dying father, King Kyansittha.
Palm-leaf manuscripts and folded paper
manuscripts came into existence only after the 15th
century.
Myanmar classical literature is flowery with long,
difficult sentences and is concerned with the supernatural
and magical.
Present-day literature is still dominated by religious
works, although there are many novels, short stories,
poems, children's books, translations of foreign works, and
works on culture, art, and science.

There are essentially three kinds of Buddhist
structures: 1) stupas, bell-shaped structures that contain a
holy relic or scripture; 2) temples, place of worship

Gold cladding is a sacred practice of traditional
Burmese architecture, reinforcing the importance of majestic
structures.
The Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmar’s largest city,

The 2021 crisis in Myanmar had the country on
the verge of collapse. The Myanmar Institute for Peace
and Security, a local research group, said that as of
January 2022 about 61% of the country was embroiled
in armed conflict. Before the coup, 65% of the country
was peaceful.
Widespread destruction from the armed conflict
between the junta and anti-coup forces, combined with
economic instability, painted a bleak future for the
country. Since seizing power, the military junta had
violently suppressed public dissent, killing 1,435 people
and is currently holding 8,385 more in detention.
