PERFORMANCE &
PREPARATION OF
SEEDLINGS
Day 1 Session 2
SHERWIN M. RIMAS
City Government Department Head I
Office of the City Agriculturist
TERMINAL OBJECTIVE
At the end of the session, the participants are expected to:
1. Seed takes water, swells and softens seed coat, with enzymes and optimum temp.
(Imbibition)
2. Seed respire, produces proteins, metabolizes the stored food (Cotyledon).
3. Seed ruptures its seed coat, radicle emerges to form a primary root downward
and anchors to the soil.
4. Plumule, epicotyl and hypocotyl grows upward to form first shoot.
2. Seedling (Root and Leaf Development)
2-4 weeks old
New leaves start to form, and the stem gets longer
moist but not wet growing environment
too dry: wilt and die
too damp: root rot
Apply equal amounts
of N,P,K if needed (usually
after the second set of
true leaves)
3. Vegetative (Young Plant)
4 to 6 weeks
majority of the growing, producing
and strengthening stems, leaves,
branches, and the root system
start applying fertilizer, needs
more extra nitrogen.
4. Flowering/Pollination Stage
6 to 8 weeks
flowers are formed and the fruit begins to grow
flowering stage typically lasts for about two
weeks, thus needs enough water, nutrients and
6 hours of sunlight
needs more phosphorus and potassium
for blooms/flowers
5. Fruits and Seeds Formation
Self-pollination/cross pollination
6. Harvesting
depends on maturity
