Cultivation
Cultivation provides us with food crops and new pastures. But it also reduces the organic matter in soil, and can
lead to increased erosion. Waikato Regional Council recommends growing annual cover crops, reducing
cultivation and adding organic matter (compost, manure) to soil to help restore soil organic matter.
On this page: What is cultivation?, What cultivation does to soil, Why organic matter is important, Increasing soil
organic matter, Cultivation and peat soil
What is cultivation?
Cultivation is any process that involves turning over or tilling the soil. It can include:
1. pasture renewal
2. cropping (such as growing maize)
3. intensive cropping (such as commercial vegetable growing).
What cultivation does to soil
Soil organic matter is an indicator of soil quality. We estimate it by measuring the organic carbon in soils. Regular
cultivation exposes more soil to the air, which mineralises soil organic matter. This means that the soil’s organic
carbon is lost as the gas carbon dioxide (CO2).
Waikato dairy pasture soils still have good
amounts of soil organic matter – but some
cropping soils have lost up to 60 percent.
Soils that have lost a lot of their organic matter need more and more fertiliser and water to maintain productivity.
To find out more about preventing fertiliser runoff read the NZ Fertiliser Manufacturer’s Research Association
Code of Practice for Fertiliser Use.
1. grow annual cover crops between productive crops – these cover crops can then be mulched into the
ground
2. apply compost, organic manure or effluent to the soil.
With more organic matter, soil is better able to store nutrients and water, and has improved soil structure. This
makes soil more resistant to erosion by wind and water.
Cultivation and peat soil
Cultivation causes peat to shrink twice as fast as it would under pasture, and should be avoided where possible.
If cultivation is done correctly during pasture renewal, it won’t need to be done as often. Managing your pasture
well also reduces the need for pasture renewal.
Find out more about managing peat. Place an order if you would like a published paper copy of For Peat’s Sake
– good management practices for Waikato peat farmers (containing information on peat land management).
Find out more about cultivation’s impacts on soil management in the Franklin District.

To deepen our understanding, let’s address the questions we asked ourselves at the outset.
Cultivating the soil also makes it easier for newly germinated seeds to sprout through the
surface of the soil.
While cultivating can also bring some weed seeds to the soil surface to germinate,
cultivating will also draw up and expose these young weed sprouts, leaving them to die
when left exposed on the soil surface. Cultivating also actively interrupts the germination
of weed seeds in general.
As weeds are systematically removed it decreases competition for water and nutrients,
leaving everything for your plants to feed to their hearts content.
Cultivating improves moisture penetration and thus helps with water retention. As more
water is retained there is obviously a reduced need for supplemental watering.
Last but not least, a cultivated garden with minimal weeds looks attractive and fresh.
How to Cultivate:
Soil must only be loosened a couple of inches deep when you cultivate. If you cultivate
too deeply you will only encourage the surface to dry out faster.
While almost everyone knows the importance of water to a garden, it is vital that air is able
to penetrate the soil surface in order to benefit the micro-organisms in the soil that perform
the various important tasks of improving the soil and creating nutrients for plants.
Cultivating the soil also makes it easier for newly germinated seeds to sprout through the

How to Cultivate:
Soil must only be loosened a couple of inches deep when you cultivate. If you cultivate too

When cultivating, care must be taken to not disturb plant roots, which will cause damage to
your plants. Cultivating between the rows and not getting too close to your plants will prevent
damaging roots and the plants attached to them.
When to Cultivate:
Only surface cultivate when necessary. If you can easily observe that the soil surface has
crusted over and that weeds are sprouting and on the offensive, it is time to shallow
cultivate.
Do not cultivate when the soil is wet. By doing this you will risk further compaction. The soil
should be dry. In fact, err on the side of more dry than moist. If it seems too moist it
probably is.
Before you lay down seed is also a good time to cultivate. If working with small fine seeds
they will have an easier time sprouting and thriving in cultivated soil.
Teaching can be defined as engagement with learners to enable their understanding and application of
knowledge, concepts and processes. It includes design, content selection, delivery, assessment and reflection.
To teach is to engage students in learning; thus teaching consists of getting students involved in the active
construction of knowledge. A teacher requires not only knowledge of subject matter, but knowledge of how
students learn and how to transform them into active learners. Good teaching, then, requires a commitment
to systematic understanding of learning. The aim of teaching is not only to transmit information, but also to
transform students from passive recipients of other people's knowledge into active constructors of their own
and others' knowledge. The teacher cannot transform without the student's active participation, of course.
Teaching is fundamentally about creating the pedagogical, social, and ethical conditions under which students
agree to take charge of their own learning, individually and collectively.
[ Education for judgment: The artistry of discussion leadership. Edited by C. Roland Christensen, David A.
Garvin, and Ann Sweet. Cambridge, MA: Harvard Business School, 1991. ]
Learning can be defined as the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being
taught, or experiencing something (Merriam-Webster dictionary). Learning is about what students do, not
about what we as teachers do.

INTRODUCTION
To make teaching more effective, the teachers should integrate the various
learning styles to identify the degree learners’ way on how they absorb learning and to
measure accurately the scope of their learning. With the use of these variety of
learning styles, it easy for the teachers to deal with the students with regards to
transfer and mastery of learning.
The aim of teaching can only be achieved when teachers work patiently with
the leaners in dealing with their differences with the use of the different learning styles
like tactile, auditory, kinesthetic and visual. Leaners learn more when they respond
spontaneously to teachers’ good way of giving instruction coupled with well-planned
differentiated activities that encompass the leaners’ dimensions. In short, teachers and
students are mutual in terms of imparting knowledge and gaining information. What
the teachers should do, the students should do too. If this happens, both teachers and
students enjoy the significance of the teaching and learning process.
The outcome of learning depends on the style teaching. Good teachers are
prepared mentors, better teachers are creative advisers and creative teachers are the
best teachers of all time.
REFLECTION
The discussants on the topics on “Teaching and Learning” and “The different
Learning Styles” made their time very significant in terms of sharing ideas. Their
colleagues who served as their audience enjoyed too their moments in dealing with
them because they learned so much from the Learning Action Cell Session. They
discussed in details every concept with the used of concrete examples where we as
participants were able to cross the level of the cognitive domains from knowledge up
to the creating cognitive skill. As a result, we were able to craft DLP integrating the
different learning styles as we go through with the teaching and learning process.
What I gained in the LAC session will serve as my best tool to strengthen and
empower my role in facilitating teaching and learning process.
At the end of the interactive session, I came to realize that “You are what you
teach”. What the students showcase in their daily life reflect on how they are led,
guided and taught by their teachers.
