What is heat? Heat is the energy that transfers from a body with a higher temperature to a body with lower temperature.
It stops to become heat when transfer
stops. Heat moves from the source to other objects or places. What is thermal energy? Energy that enables an object to move or vibrate particles. How is heat related to thermal energy? Heat is a form of energy that refers to the thermal energy that is in the process of being transferred.
In other words, heat is energy " in
transit". Heat transfer is related to change in temperature or change in the relative hotness or coldness of an object.
Thermometer is used to measure the
temperature of a body. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a material. The higher the temperature of a body is, the faster is the movement of its particles and the greater is their average kinetic energy. Modes of Heat transfer Heat can be transferred through three different modes------ by conduction, convection, or radiation
These modes of heat transfer occur
when you are in front of the stove cooking food. Conduction Conduction takes place between objects that are in contact with each other.
Heat is transferred from molecule to
molecule. The energy from your stove transfers to the frying pan and cooks the food in the pan. Think of a metal spoon put in a bowl of hot champorado. The heat from the champorado is transferred to the part of the spoon by conduction. When you touched the spoon, heat is also transferred to your hand by conduction. Conductors and Insulators Materials that allow thermal energy to readily pass through them are called conductors.
Examples are metals like copper,
steel and silver. Conductors and Insulators Materials like wood, cloth, plastic, rubber and fiber glass are poor conductors of heat. Thermal energy doest not easily transfer through them. A poor conductor is called insulator. Convection
In fluids, heat energy is transferred by
convection. Convection is the transfer of energy by the rising and sinking of matter depending on its density. When you heat water on a stove, you will notice bubbles of water coming up from the bottom of the pot. Radiation Heat from the stove reaches you by radiation. Radiation is the transfer of energy in the form of invisible waves. Radiant energy that is absorbed is changed to heat energy. Do you know that all objects, even ordinary ones, give off heat into surrounding by radiation?
The transfer of energy from the sun
across nearly empty space is made possible by radiation.
