Birthday: April 9, 1918
Lived in Copenhagen, Denmark
… in secondary school, he began helping his
father, the director of a shipyard in Alborg,
Denmark, and a brilliant naval architect.
… after secondary school, he won admission
to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in
Copenhagen.
he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1942.

fled to neutral Sweden where he was employed in

the Stockholm office of Hakon Ahlberg for the
duration of the war. He then went to Finland to
work with Alvar Aalto.
Among his first major works are two houses in Denmark,
his in Hellebæk (1952) and another in Holte (1952-1953).

… finally came the result of the design competition for the

new opera house in Sydney, which would eventually make it
internationally famous for its expressionist construction
and dramatic design made up of a series of large shells,
each taken from the same hemisphere.

The father of the Sydney Opera House, who was awarded

the award Pritzker in 2003, he found inspiration in the
study of Mayan and Aztec architecture,

Nine years later, in 1966, Utzon was forced to resign his

position and leave Australia…

Utzon devoted himself to two other projects, such as the

The huge shell-concrete
canopies are in striking contrast
with the modular courtyard
structures covered by flat roofs.
All the structures in the complex are in reinforced
concrete consisting of 12,800 specially shaped
precast elements made up of 150 basic types.
All the elements are of white cement concrete with
smooth exposed concrete finish.

scale.
In this case it uses unsymmetrical balance. As
you can see the two sides are different from
one another and the visual weight has been
distributed unevenly, and yet, the design still
achieved a sense of balance.
A unifying movement characterized by a
patterned repetition or alternation of formal
elements or motifs in the same or modified
form
The central motif of the building is the main
entrance which is located facing towards the ocean.
The form of the main entrance is bigger than the
other parts of the building to emphasize the
entrance’s location.
The Character manifested in this structure can both
be functional and associated.
Utzon’s well-intended attempt to appeal to a
somewhat fantasized Kuwaiti culture at times
devolves into a reductive imitation of Arab
structures and ornament.
“I like to be on the edge of possible.”
