SCIENCE

SOUND IN
ACTION
Kristina Cassandra R. Gaytano
TAP ON THE DRUMS AND OBSERVE WHAT
HAPPEN TO THE PAPER CLIPS. WHAT DID
YOU SEE? WHAT DID YOU HEAR?

As I have observed based on executing the action, the paperclips move either back and
forth or up and down. In addition, the paper clips also crontributes to the sound since aside
from the produced sound of the drum by the tapping of my hands the mediums also produce a
sound when the paperclip hits it after its movement. However, because the paperclips are little,
the sound is not loud. As a result of this outcomes, I’ve come to the conclusion that when two
mediums move and collide, vibrations are produced, which then create movement in the
surrounding air molecules. These molecules then clash with molecules nearby, causing them to
vibrate and generate a sound.
TOUCH THE SIDE OF YOUR THROAT, SAY
“AHH” AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF LOUDNESS.
WHAT DID YOU FEEL AS YOU SAID, “AHH”?
WHAT DID YOU HEAR?
While doing the stated action, I felt my throat move and to be exact it vibrates as
I say "ahhh." However, the intensity of the vibration depends on the loudness of my
voice since when I spoke in a soft manner, the vibration was not that hard, but, when
I spoke loudly the vibration was intense. The vibration is due to the vocal cords
because in order to speak, we move air past our vocal cords, which makes them
vibrate. Lastly, my voice when I was speaking in a loud manner was loud because I
was touching my throat.
Gently strike the tuning fork on the pad
and then place it on the water. Describe
what you observed. What did you see?
What did you hear?

03
When I striked the tuning fork on the pad, we can hear a
high-pitched sound that can be usually heard from
orchestras. Then the vibration of the tuning fork is obviously
seen. However, the difference between the tuning fork
outside and inside the water is clearly seen by my bare eyes
and heard by my ears. Because when the tuning fork was
placed in the water the sound of the tuning fork cannot be
heard instead the splash of the water is the one being heard.
This is due to the energy being transferred from the fork into
the water. Remember water is the better medium to visualize
sound waves and detect the rapid motion of a vibrating
tuning fork.
PLUCK THE RUBBER
BAND. WHAT DID YOU
SEE? WHAT DID YOU
HEAR?
As we pluck the rubber band, it creates

04
a movement of back and forth which can
also be called as vibration. Afterwards, the
vibration will now create a twanging
sounds. As for the reason, sound travels
when a string vibrates, when a string
vibrates, it causes molecules of gases in the
air around it to vibrate, which is why sound
travels. The molecules clump together, then
disperse.
Hold one end of the ruler firmly
against the top of the table. Snap
the other end. What did you see?
What did you hear?
Similarly to other situations,
the object being observed, which is

05
the ruler, made a movement that
also produced vibrations and helps
us make sounds. The occurrence of
it hitting the table makes an
unpleasant sound because it is loud
and distracting.
