challenges of middle & late adolescence.
• OBJECTIVES: The learners will be able to:
• 1. Discuss the challenges during adolescence and clarify the demands of
teen years.
• 2. Express his/her feelings on the expectations of the significant people
around him/her (parents, siblings, friends, teachers, community leaders).
• 3. Make affirmations that help one become more capable as an adolescent.
• LESSON OUTCOMES: To understand the developmental changes in
middle and late adolescence, and expectations of and from adolescents.

• Middle & Late adolescence is a time of change & transition from


dependence on the family to increasing responsibilities

Life starts wherein adolescents are dependent in their parents

• The adolescence gradually proceeds in the transition phase from
dependency to independence

The adolescents experience some turbulence in their relationship with his parents, shifting prospective outside agency

• If transition is unsuccessful, they may have an adversarial relationship
with their parents which may lead to bitterness towards their parents.

Other factors might affect the parent & child relationship such as parental rejection, abuse, socio-economic status, and early deprivation

Adolescents may complain regarding too many requirements for how


they should project themselves
They commonly complain if their parents scold them regarding table manners, what they should eat, school marks that are being compared to others

Adolescents were born with


temperament of traits that can
be accounted from their
genes.

Expression of these traits may vary depending on the type of exposure in the environment, hence social environment is highly influential

Adolescents and parents should have an open communication

Difficulties in communication can also contribute to adversarial relationship

Parental affection, the experience of being loved and cared for are
highly important in upbringing the adolescents.
both parents are now forced to work, contradicts the suggestion at least one of the primary caregiver should stay at home

Since the family may not have a clear hold with temptations in the outside world, the range of parental security may be limited.

adjustment problems in school are caused by the adolescent’s perception that they are being scrutinized & evaluated by others

Family & close personal relationships with other people contributes a


vital role in the development of one’s self-presentation

Self-presentation is presenting oneself to other people to gain favorable impression.


Middle and Late Adolescence is a time of change and transition
from dependence on the family to increasing responsibilities.
Parents, home, and family play a very important role in preparing
adolescents to become emotionally mature and help them
succeed in the adult world.
Adolescents face different challenges in life. As they undergo various
developmental changes, the support they get from their family, peers, and
community helps them meet the demand and expectations from them.
