Introduction to Digital
Factory
Overview
Today, companies are facing growing complexity in their
productions and a constant increase in product variants. The
digital factory as a set of tools and methods is key to coping with
the global scale of planning and production that we see in the
modern experience economy. In this module, you will learn what
digital factory is, how it can help keep all stakeholders involved in
production on the same page, and how it connects the dots
across disciplines. Additionally, you will get an impression of how
the digital factory works.  This introductory activity provides an
introduction to the topic and does not require any prior
knowledge. A basic understanding of product development and
how production in industry works is helpful but not necessary.

Let's take a look at how a digital factory

platform can help modern production with
these challenges.

•The digital factory can be seen as a tool bridging the gap
between the virtual world and the real world.
•It connects product development, production planning,

Introduction to Process Planning
Overview
As the complexity of modern production increases, new technologies are able to bring production
management to a new level. A digital factory as a comprehensive platform that helps plan complex global
production. In this module, you will learn about the basics of process planning and how it happens in the
digital factory. You will see practical examples of planning with digital factory tools and methods, find out
how process planning can create a basis for optimizations and bring economic benefits, and look into the
main applications of the digital factory for process planning. This module provides an introduction to the
topic and does not require any prior knowledge. A basic understanding of how production in the industry
works and what the digital factory is can be helpful, but not necessary.
Objectives •what "process" means in production.
•how process planning happens in the digital factory.
•how process planning can optimize complex production.
•about the main areas that are considered in process planning.
•what the Product-Process-Resource model (PPR) is and how it can support

•about selected additional tools and methods that can support process
planning.
•about the 4 areas of process planning: assembly, fabrication, quality, and
logistics.
•what output is generated in the digital factory for each of these areas.
•how process planning in the digital factory can be beneficial for the
company.
Several aspects must be considered when
planning a manufacturing facility (new facilities
and changing existing manufacturing facilities).
Depending on what will be produced, a process
plan is developed, which affects how we want to
arrange the equipment and resources. This is
defined in the layout planning, which, in turn,
defines how the material will flow through the
factory. These three components are
interconnected and provide inputs for each other
Process planning in the digital factory can be done
with different tools and methods. The most
important method is the digital Product-Process-

•In order to answer the core questions around Digital Manufacturing,
the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform relies upon a data model organized around
four primary types of content:

1. The “Engineering Product” or Design Reference data.  This is a

Physical Product Structure with or without associated 3D shapes.

2. The “Manufactured Items”.  This “Manufactured Item Definition”

data model is the MBOM and it defines the manufacturing view of the
design product, supporting both fabrication as well as assembly steps
or transformations.

3. The "Process Planning".  The related data model called

“Manufacturing System Definition” is a logical hierarchical view of the
work required to manufacture the MBOM.  In some industrial
scenarios, the MBOM is viewed simply as an “output” of the Process
Planning activity.

4. The "Physical Resource" definition required to perform the Process

Planning activity. This can include both static Resources such as a
factory/facility 3D layout, as well as specific machines or tools which
may be programmable such as Robots, human workers and hand tools
which must be accounted for in process planning.

These 4 data structures are linked together and collectively enable the
user to answer the 3 primary questions regarding what, where, and
how best to produce the product .
