PASSIVE VOICE

Pattern : Obj + To be + V3 + (agent)


1). Object is from the Object of Active
sentence.
2). To be is in line with the Tense.
1. Simple present ( V1/+s) : am, is, are
2. Past Tense (V2) : was, were
3. Present cont (To be + V + ing) : am, is,
are +being
4. Present future (will+V1) : shall / will +
be
5. Present Perfect : have / has +been
6. Past cont : was, were + being
7. Past Perfect : had + been
8. Pres Perfect cont : have, has + been
being.
9. Modal / Aux : Modal / Aux + be
3). V3 (Verb three) : mind the irregular
verbs
4). Agent (doer) : The objective
pronoun from the subject of the active
sentence. The following agents are not
necessarily used : people,( some, any
every, no) body, one, thing.
• Examples :
1. A. The maid always cleans my room.
P. My room is always cleaned by the maid.
2. A. My brother sold his bicycle yesterday
P. His bicycle was sold by him yesterday.
3. A. Your friends are waiting for you now.
P You are being waited for by them now.
4. A. Someone has stolen my wallet.
P. My wallet has been stolen (by someone ?)
5. A. Somebody has been painting the doors for
hours.
P. The doors have been being painted for hours.

CHANGE INTO PASSIVE
1. The wind blew his hat down the street.
2. They will take her to the hospital tomorrow.
3. An unseen hand opened the window.
4. They had eaten all the dinner before they
finished the conversation ( 2 passives)
5. Somebody left the light on all night.
6. No one can answer your question.
7. Has someone mended that chair yet ?
8. Didn’t they tell you to be here by six o’clock?
9. You must not throw away empty bottles.
10. Nobody has ever spoken to me like that before
11. One cannot eat an orange if nobody has peeled
it.
12. The doctor had to operate on him to find out
what was wrong.
13. Don’t let the others see you.
14. People say that tortoises live longer than
elephants
15. Men can shell cities from a distance of miles.
16. Somebody has locked the box and I cannot open
it.
