ATTENTiON!!!!!!!

CLIMATE
1. Describe the factors that affect the climate of a region.
2. Explain certain climatic phenomena that occur on a
global level, including El Nino and global warming.
3. Relate the amount of radiant energy received in an
area to its climate.
4. Research on how climate has affected plant and
animals.
EQ
1. Why does climate vary in many areas of the world?
2. How do changes in the climate affect plant and animal
life?
3. Why does climate changes?
4. Are you prepared for climate change?
3RD QUARTER PERFORMANCE TASK
CLIMATE VS WEATHER
Climate
 The average weather condition in an area over a long
period of time.
  How the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long
periods of time.
 Factors: Temperature and Precipitation.
WEATHER
conditions of the atmosphere over
a short period of time.
short-term conditions.
what the forecasters on the TV
news predict each day. They tell
people about the temperature,
cloudiness, humidity, and whether
a storm is likely in the next few
days.

FACTORS AFFECTING TEMPERATURE

 Temperature depends on the amount of energy

received from the sun based on the angle and location
at which sunlight strikes Earth.
 General Zones of Climate based on Temperature
1. Polar
2. Tropical
3. Temperate
Latitude
 A measure of distance north and south of the equator.
 Areas at the equator (0 degree) receive direct rays of the
sun.
 Direct sunlight will have warm climate (summer) while
indirect sunlight will have cool climates (winter)
Climate Types of the Philippines
Climate Description Regions/areas
type
1 Dry season – November to October Ilocos, Central Luzon,
Wet season – June to October Mentro Manila and
Zambales
2 No dry season but rainfall from November to Bicol, Samar, Leyte, and
January Eastern Mindanao
3 Seasons are not too pronounced but may be Cagayan, isabela, Mt.
dry from November to April or wet during Province and Nueva
the rest of the year. Vizcaya
4 Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the Batanes, Northeastern
year Luzon, Bicol region and
western part of leyte
Altitude
 The elevation or distance above the mean sea level.
 Sea level is the level of the sea at a particular time.
 As a general rule, the density of air decreases as you
move higher. Les dense air cannot hold as much heat.
 Pressure changes with altitude. LPA and HPA
 As you move up the atmosphere, air pressure decreases
rapidly vice versa.
Altitude
Ocean Current
 A stream of water that flows in definite path.
 Warm ocean currents originate from the equator while
ocean currents traveling towards the eqautor are cold
water currents.

 Connect land breeze and sea breeze.

Factors Affecting Precipitation
1. Prevailing Winds
 It carries different amounts of moisture, affecting the
amount of precipitation a region receives.
Mountain Ranges
 Act as a barrier to prevailing winds.
 The side of the mountain facing the wind is known as
the windward side which receives moist air and has
more precipitation. What is the climate? (Cold or wet
climate)
 Leeward side has little precipitation and a dry climate.

Read pages 178-179 and list down the natural causes of

climate change.
Natural Causes of Climate Change
What do you think was the climate like during the age of
the dinosaurs?
Is it possible that their extinction was caused by climate
change?
What causes climate to change?
Three natural factors:
1. Slow drifting of the continents.
2. Changes in the sun’s energy output.
3. Variations in the position of Earth in relation to the
sun.
1. Slow drifting of the continents.
2. Changes in the sun’s energy output.

 The impact of asteroid produces large amount of ash

and smoke that blocked the sunlight - - interruption of
photosynthesis.
3. Variations in the position of Earth in relation to the sun.

 During the series of glaciations, the shape of Earth’s

orbit changed from nearly circular to mildly elliptical.
Result: Global temperature dropped.
 Tilt of Earth’s axis from 22.1 to 24.5
Result: Received less energy from the sun
- - - Global cooling.
