“The Martyr“

The Martyr
Being in love means never having to say Everything seemed to glow for you,
you’re sorry And you were my everything.
After all, at some point in your life I wouldn't even think twice about
That love was the most important thing sacrificing my own happiness for yours,
to you, I was even willing to bare up this walled
That love might be the one that you but crumpled heart of mine,
hoped would last forever, Just so I could be with you.
That love made you believe that destiny All I ever did was care for you.
does exist, All I ever did was to make you happy.
And that love made you question, And all I ever did was love you.
Why you were afraid to fall in love in the Being in love means never having to say
first place. you’re sorry
At that time in your life, But I needed to ask forgiveness from the
Everything just seemed so perfect, one who was hurt the most…
Everything seemed so beautiful, Myself.

Interpretation and Message

• “The Martyr” is a good poem that reflects the
life of those who already experienced falling in
love.
• The tone includes regret, sadness, and
disappointment.

14
• Nick Joaquin was also feeling in love while
reminiscing the poem
• The message that the author wanted to convey
was the importance of giving yourself the
happiness you deserve
• Reminder for all the readers that love can be
misleading. Do not give other people everything
you have, leave some for yourself too. So that
you won’t feel sorry or apologize to yourself
anymore.
