1 What is the Wind Turbines?

• A wind turbine is a rotating machine which converts

the kinetic energy in wind into mechanical energy. The
mechanical energy can be converted into electrical
energy, or it can be used to pump water or grind
crops. If it is used to make electricity, it can be called a
wind turbine, but if it is used to grind or pump, it is
called a windmill.
2 Why Do We Need Wind Energy?

• Our energy needs are changing, and so is the way we are

meeting them. The morocco has a legally binding
commitment to continue dramatically reducing its
greenhouse gas emissions over the coming decades; and
energy production is the biggest current source of these
emissions. Not only does burning fossil fuels emit greenhouse
gases, but fossil fuel reserves are a finite resource and
increasingly need to be imported from overseas ,The wind, in
contrast, is freely available and endlessly renewable,
3) The role of
technical in
wind energy
Wind turbine service technicians typically do
the following:

• Inspect the exterior and physical integrity

of towers
• Climb towers to inspect or repair turbine
equipment
• Collect turbine data for testing or research
and analysis
• Perform routine maintenance on wind
turbines
• Test electrical components and systems,
as well as mechanical and hydraulic
systems
• Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, or
electrical malfunctions
• Service underground transmission
systems, wind field substations, or fiber
optic sensing and control systems
• Replace worn or malfunctioning
components

energy
Source Advantages Disadvantages

• Does require special materials for mirrors/panels that

can affect environment
Sunlight is free when • Current technology requires large amounts of land for
Solar small amounts of energy generation
available
• Procurement of solar panels and other photovoltaic
equipment is very expensive

• Very limited source since it depends on water elevation

Very inexpensive once dam • Many dams available are currently ceasing to exist (not
Hydroelectric is much of a future source)
built • Dam collapse usually leads to loss of life
• Dams have affected fish (e.g. salmon runs)
Source Advantages Disadvantages

Wind is free if available

• Good source for periodic water •Limited to windy areas.
pumping demands of farms as •Limited to small generator size; need
Wind many towers.
used earlier in 1900's
• Well suited to rural areas. • Need expensive energy storage (e.g.
batteries)

Requires larger capital cost because

• Fuel is inexpensive of emergency, containment,
• Energy generation is the most radioactive waste and storage
Nuclear concentrated source
systems
• Waste is more compact than any • Requires resolution of the long-term

high level waste storage issue in
• Easy to transport new fuel most countries
