CAVITE MUTINY
Background of the Document
The author have used secondary source of information since the author
was not around during the time the Cavite Mutiny happened. There are
numerous journals and scholarly articles that provides the
documented first–hand and second–hand accounts of those were
involved in the mutiny as well as those who are close and related to
them.

Furthermore, the excerpts of Spanish Version of the Cavite Mutiny

shown in the analysis can be read from the official report of Governor

Philippines History published in 1990 which was authored by Gregorio
and Sonia Zaide.

The 12th of June of every year since 1898 is a very
important event for all the Filipinos. In this particular day, the
entire Filipino nation as well as Filipino communities all over the
world gathers to celebrate the Philippines’ Independence Day. 1898
came to be a very significant year for all of us— it is as equally
important as 1896—the year when the Philippine Revolution broke
out owing to the Filipinos’ desire to be free from the abuses
of the Spanish colonial regime. But we should be reminded that
another year is as historic as the two—1872.

Two major events happened in 1872, first was the 1872 Cavite
Mutiny and the other was the martyrdom of the three martyr priests
in the persons of Fathers Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos and Jacinto
Zamora (GOMBURZA). However, not all of us knew that there
were different accounts in reference to the said event. All
Filipinos must know the different sides of the story—since this
event led to another tragic yet meaningful part of our history—the
execution of GOMBURZA which in effect a major factor in the
awakening of nationalism among the Filipinos.

Perspective is the ‘point of view’ from which the creator of a
source described historical events. Every person sees and
understands events differently depending on their age, gender, social
position, beliefs and values. Even modern historians have their own
perspectives which can influence how they interpret the past.
As told and as heard, every story has at least two angles to
consider. Each angle or side of the story has its own contentions,
merits, or claims. Biases and prejudices may be noticeable, but they
are undeniably inevitable as they form part of the limitations of the
one telling the story. To limit distortion, exaggeration or perversion
of facts, the need to expose oneself to differing
Contribution of the Document
One historical issue worth visiting Philippine history is the Cavite
Mutiny of 1872. The increasing interest given to historical events
has triggered the call to unearth historical data, documents which are
of great value mainly because of their proximity to the time and
place the event happened, and the credibility of the one telling the
account. has been enticing people in the academe to change the way
learning history from simple gathering or accumulating of basic
historical facts which commonly answered the questions on “who”,
“when” and “where” As told and as heard, every story has at least
two angles to consider.
Relevance of the Document
History lets us know and understand the past. The Cavite Mutiny
of 1872 serves as one of the most meaningful and important event in
our Philippine history. This lets us understand why the 1872 Cavite
Mutiny ensued, determine who instigated the event, and show that
the three secular priests were not implicated and did not conspire
with the mutiny. The impact of the Cavite Mutiny in the present time
arises partly from our understanding of nationalism. These uprisings
and movements were among the first Filipino uprisings against
Spanish repression; despite knowing that Spain would have more
extra forces, they still fought until the bitter end, as a result of the
death of the three priests, Burgos, Gomez, and Zamora.
