Components of RPD
• Saddles: The saddle is the part of the denture that
carries the artificial teeth over the edentulous area.
• Abutment: A tooth that support a partial denture
2
CLASSIFICATION
• Classification according to support
The partial dentures are classified according to the vertical support into
I-Tooth borne; derives its support totally from the abutment teeth
throughout rests.
2- Mucosa borne; supported totally
by the edentulous ridge.
3- Tooth-mucosa support; supported
by both abutment teeth and the edentulous ridge as in free end saddle
(distal extension base).

CLASSIFICATION
There are various methods and systems to classify partially dentate
arches. The most common between them is Kennedy Classification.
Kennedy's classification
Dr. Edward Kennedy proposed this classification in 1923.
- based on the relationships of the edentulous spaces to abutment teeth.
-most popular classification.

• Class III: unilateral edentulous
area with natural teeth anterior
and posterior to it,
i.e. this indicates a single
edentulous area which doesn’t
cross the midline of the arch, with
teeth present on both sides of it.

Rules for the Kennedy
Classification
Applegate provided the following eight rules to govern the application of the
Kennedy system :
Apple gate
Applegate's Rules for the Kennedy
Classification
Rule 1:
Classification should follow rather than
precede extraction
Rule 2:
If 3rd molar is missing &
not to be replaced, it is not considered in
the classification
Applegate's Rules for the Kennedy
Classification
Rule 3:
If the 3rd molar is present and to be
used as an abutment, it is considered in the
classification

Classification
Rule 4:
If the second molar is missing
and not to be replaced, it is not
considered in the classification

Classification
Rule 5:
The most posterior edentulous area
determines the classification

Rule 6:
Edentulous areas other than those
determining classification are called
modification spaces
