 Some Important Principles
• There are 4 types of interpreting modes:
– Conference Interpreting – One interpreter speaks for several
audiences such as UN or Global conferences
– Simultaneous Interpreting – Interpreter interprets at the
same time as the other person still speaking such as movies,
news segments, TV competition etc.
– Dialogue/Liaison Interpreting – Interpreter serves two
people, one English and one Urdu speaker. Each
individual’s sentences are rendered in the other language
once they finish speaking. Most common for community
language scenarios.
– Sight Interpreting – Interpreter is given a document to read
and interpret in front of an authority or audience.
 Principles to Remember
• Always interpret in first person
• Remember to interpret in the same gender
– Female: I do not know much about your illness
– Mein aapki bemari kay baray mein zyada nahi
jaanti.
 Principles to Remember
• Idiomatic Interpretation (‫ )ب ا حم ا ورہ‬is the key
• In context, Not literal!!
– I am here see your bundle of joy
WRONG: Mein apki khushion ki gathri ko dekhne aye
hun.
CORRECT: Mein aakay nomolood bachay ko dekhne
aye hun.

 Changing Sentence Structure
• For fluency, shuffle the words or rearrange
them.
– Life insurance protects you from the financial
impact of illnesses and injuries.
– Literal: Zindagi ka bema aap ko tahafuz deta hai
maali asar se bemarion aur choton kay.
– Contextual: Zindagi ka bema aap ko bemarion aur
choton kay maali asrat se tahafuz faraham karta
hai.
 Use of English Words in LOTE
• According to NAATI language policies, limited
use of English words are permitted as long as
they are commonly used & understood by a
majority of Urdu speaking community in
Australia.
• Limited use of Hindi words are also allowed
such as jaankari, bema, dikat etc.
• Use English words as a last resort!
 Problem of Accuracy: Memory
• Making notes (not always helpful)
– Use key words
– Use symbols
– Use linear flow
• Focus on meaning, not the words
• Divide your ideas into categories and maps
• Daily practice – max target 40 words
 Things to Remember
• Note taking is good, but it can interfere with
memory and fluency
• If you cannot interpret a word, just repeat it in
English and move on
• Work on memorizing at least 3 lines/35 words
at once by listening to BBC Urdu, SBS Urdu
and GEO/ARY etc
