Drilling fluid(Mud)
 Drilling fluid is usually a mixture of: water/oil(base fluid), bentonite, weighing material and few chemicals.
 Drilling mud in drilling engineering is used to aid the drilling of wells.
• The mud or drilling fluid has many functions. While selecting mud physical and chemical
properties to fulfill these tasks, consideration must be given to:
- Environmental issues
- Convenience of drilling process
- The total cost
Types of mud
Synthetic based
Water based mud(WBD) Oil based mud(OBD)
fluid(SBM)
• Base fluid is water. • Base fluid is petroleum • Base fluid is synthetic oil.

WHY ??

Particle Particle Example • To remove the cuttings and contaminants.

Size Classification • To reuse the mud again.
• To avoid mud wastage by recycling which

Intermediate • To prevent the contaminants from affecting

solids. the valuable properties of mud.

LMSS(linear motion shale shaker):
 G Force ≤7.0 g.
 Deck angle: -3~+5°
 Separation Particle : > 65 μm removal.

FREQUENT TROUBLE SHOOTING

LMSS MUD OVER-FLOW:
 Cleanliness of Shaker screen
 Check Deck Angle
 Proper screen size

 Make: MI SWACO(mongoose) LMSS Specification used in S#2

 2 units
 Rated capacity 500 GPM
• One Micron = 1X10-6 m
 Motion - Linear • Mesh size = no. of openings in a
square inch.

HYDROCYCLONES
DISILTER: Inner vortex

• Separation Particle Size: (12 – 74) μm removal

• Fluid Pressure requirement: 35psi
• Capacity (per cone): 50 – 80 gpm

(from apex opening)
• Separation Particle Size (for normal LM Shaker system): (12/20 – 74)μm removal
• Separation Particle Size (Hi-G LM Shaker system): (7 - 20)μm removal
Rope Discharge through Hydro-cyclone: (Troubleshooting)
• To check the fluid pressure. Maintain the pressure (75 ft of head)
• To check fluid flow rate to match with the cone capacity
• Check particle separation size
