Design Considerations In

Injection Molding

Part II
Providing adequate draft angle
Parameters to determine draft angle
 Depth of draw
 Material rigidity
 Surface lubricity
 Mold surface roughness
 Material shrinkage
Cavity draft angle :
Zero draft
During ejection draft angle ranging from ¼ ºto 2 º
Advantage :
Draft angles reduce the initial ejection forces.
Easy stacking (cups &chairs)
Providing ribs
 Provides adequate strength & stiffness
 Prevent plastic from warping
 Reduce the weight of the product
Shallow ribs
Ribs having their height less than 2t are called shallow ribs
More than 2t – air get entrapped
Methods to disguise the sink marks
caused by thicker rib
Undercuts
 For producing undercuts various
molding techniques like side cores ,split
core – but very complicated to maintain
incase of failure.
classification
 External undercuts
 Internal undercuts
Variables considered in stripping –
external undercut parts
 Allowable part strain
 Forces required for ejection
 Mold temperature
 Molding cycle
 Undercut geometry
Case study
