REACTION INJECTION

MOLDING
 RAJESH.S(0280)
WHAT IS RIM?

Reaction Injection Molding - RIM, a

process in which two or more liquid
chemical components from separate
tanks are fed through high-pressure
supply lines to a chamber where they
are mixed by high-velocity
impingement, and then injected into the
mold at low pressure
WHY RIM?

Very little energy is required

Parts up to 100 lb produced
Surfaces don't have flow lines found in
traditional injection moulding.
Lower molding pressures
Both thin and thick wall sections

RAW MATERIAL STORAGE

Polyol & Isocyanate are major

components
Polyol stored in Stainless steel
Isocyanate stored in plastic lined steel
tanks.
METERING

Delivers the ingredients to the

mixhead with precise synchronization.
MIXING

Delivers the stream at high velocity into

mixing chamber.
MOLDING AND DEMOLDING

The intermediates flow into the

mold,and polymerize within a
minute.
After a minute or so, the product is
firm enough to be removed from the
mold.
MOLD RECOVERY

Mold must be cleaned as necessary to

remove flash.
Release agents can be sprayed or
incorporated in the material itself.

MATERIALS FOR RIM

Polyurethane rigid structural foam

Integral skin foams
Polyurea materials
Filling of metering cylinder

The mold is closed and

metering pistons are
allowed to move
backwards, filling up with
reactants.
High pressure recycle through
mixhead
Pistons are pressurized
and hoses feed the
reactants to the
mixhead
Mixhead open

Mixhead is rapidly
opened and the mold
is filled

Low Pressure Conditioning

Temperature must be maintained for

storage tanks

Dispersion of dry air or nitrogen
High Pressure Metering

Delivers the reactants to mixhead at

50-250 atm. & flow rate
