    The Buddhas of Bamiyan were two monumental Buddha statues located in Bamyan, Afghanistan, carved into sandstone cliffs dating back to the 6th century. The larger statue stood 55 meters tall and depicted Vairocana Buddha while the smaller eastern statue was 38 meters and depicted Gautama Buddha. Both statues were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001 despite international pleas for preservation.
