 Shape-Swordfish have a long, flattened bill that looks like a sword, as their name
implies.
 They have a stout, rounded body and large eyes.
 Their first dorsal (back) fin is tall and crescent-shaped.
 Their anal fins (on their belly) are similar in shape to the dorsal fins but are smaller.

 Length-445cm
 Color-white, ivory, pink and orange in the raw state and cooks up to a light beige.
 Weight-1,400 lbs. (650 kg)

CHARACTERISTICS
 Swordfish, also known as broadbills in some countries and highly migratory
predatory fish characterized by a long, flat and pointed bill. They are a popular
sport fish of the billfish category. Swordfishes do not have teeth in their
jaws, nor do mature swordfish have scales. There are 12 species of sword fish.
Swordfish Scientific name is Xiphias gladius. You can eat swordfish.

INTERESTING FACTS
 Swordfish are found around the world in tropical, temperate, and sometimes
cold waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. They are found in
the Gulf Stream of the Western North Atlantic, extending north into the Grand
Banks of Newfoundland.

WHERE YOU CAN FIND THEM


At a young age, they eat tiny zooplankton, and their prey increases in size as
they do. As adults, they eat fairly large bony fishes and squids. Similarly,
swordfish are eaten by a wide variety of predators. When they are newly hatched,
they are eaten by other fishes that specialize on eating plankton.

WHAT THEY EAT


 Because, As if all that weren't enough, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
and the Environmental Protection Agency have issued an advisory warning
that swordfish are not safe to eat because they contain high levels of
mercury.

WHY WE CAN’T EAT SWORDFISH


 The swordfish is known to be one of the fastest fishes in the sea. Clocked at
speeds of 62 mph, they might very well be the fastest swimmers on the planet.
Powered by up to 1,000 pounds of dense muscle, their streamlined bodies cut
through the water like a finely-tuned hydrodynamic machine as they hunt their
prey.
