PUBLIC SPEAKING!
Glenn Prince
Public Speaking
REMINDER 1: HAVE FUN!

▪ Practice makes permanent!

▪ Best way to reduce communication apprehension is to do it!
REMINDER 2: READ THE ASSIGNMENT

▪ Check for the following:

– Are sources required?
– Do I need a visual aid?
– What is the minimum time limit?
– What’s the maximum time limit?
– When’s the due date?
– What do I need to do if I need an extension?
REMINDER 3: FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE

▪ For each speech in this course, sample outlines and/or a how-to

worksheet will be given.
▪ The outlines presented are examples of outlines that would earn you
all of the content based points for each assignment.
▪ THE KEY TO A GOOD GRADE IS TO FOLLOW THE OUTLINE
EXAMPLES PROVIDED EXACTLY.
▪ Conversely, NOT following the outline exactly is the easiest way to
not earn the points.
REMINDER 4: ORALLY CITE YOUR SOURCES!

▪ When the speech requires citations, you must ORALLY cite your sources.
▪ An oral citation includes (at a minimum): The source name and/or
author and the date the information was published.
▪ You may wish to add the qualifications for your source to enhance your
credibility.

for not staying within those parameters!

▪ Standing up is essential to giving a good speech:

speech.
▪ If you are unable to stand for any documented medical reason, this
requirement does not apply to your speeches.
REMINDER 7: LOCATION, LOCATION,
LOCATION

▪ Pick an appropriate location for your speech.

▪ The space should be:

you best!

▪ Make as much eye contact as possible with that audience to project
credibility.
REMINDER 10: ONE TAKE ONLY

▪ Your speeches must be in one, non-interrupted take.
