Examples of Cybercrime
• Malware Attacks
A computer system or network is
infected with a computer virus or
other type of malware.
A famous example of a malware
attack is the WannaCry attack, a
global cybercrime committed in May
2017.
Attack hit, 230,000 computers were
affected across 150 countries.
How to protect yourself
against cybercrime
• Keep software and operating system updated
• Use anti-virus software and keep it updated
• Use strong passwords
• Never open attachments in spam emails
• Do not click on links in spam emails or
untrusted websites
• Be mindful of which website URLs you visit
• Keep an eye on your bank statements
CYBERCRIME RATES IN PAKISTAN
• 62 cases were reported to the unit in 2007,
• 287 cases in 2008
• Ratio dropped in 2009
• In 2010 more than 312 cases were registered in
different categories of cyber crimes.
• Federal Investigation Agency received 1 LAC + IN 2021
• FIA director general Dr Sanaullah Abbasi told Dawn.
“In 23 percent of the complaints,Facebook was used as a
medium,”

• 80,641 went into verification


• 15,932 passed for inquiries.
• A total of 1,202 cases were registered
under relevant sections of the
Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act and
over 1,300 suspects were arrested.
• 2018 the agency received on an
average 4,031 complaints per month
but in 2021 the number rise to 8,688.
Federal Minister for Information
Technology and Telecom (MoITT),
Syed Amin Ul Haque has said that
there are millions of cyber-attacks
every day all over the world, including
5.5 million ransomware attacks:

The 8.5 TB data of millions of users was posted on the
dark web due to non-payment.
The data of Meezan Bank, Bank Islami was hacked but
the bank asked the customers to change their PIN
codes immediately which minimized the loss.

institutions were hacked and the latest attack was on
the data of the National Bank”.
Pakistan currently has three cyber
crime laws in place
• The Electronic Transactions
Ordinance (ETO) was enacted
in 2002

• PECA 2016 (Prevention of
Electronic Crimes Act)

• For unauthorized access to sensitive information systems,
you could face up to three years in prison, a penalty of one
million Pakistani rupees, or both.
• Disruption of critical information systems with illegal and
unethical motives can result in up to seven years in prison,
a PKR ten million fine, or both.
• For involvement in a terrorist attacks offense, you could
face up to seven years in prison, a PKR ten million fine, or
both.

• They can range from
six months in prison to
perhaps the death
penalty.
• Importing, exporting, or supplying electronic devices
for offensive use can lead to up to six months in prison,
a PKR 50 thousand fine, or both.
• For being involved in a security breach, you might face
up to three years in prison, a PKR 5 million fine, or
both.
