Competency 6.1

• Apply knowledge of human behavior and the social


environment, person-in environment, and other
multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to engage with clients
and constituencies.
Relevant Activities or Tasks

• Student will complete strengths and needs and risk assessments


for families, under appropriate supervision, to identify factors
that affect them.
Outcomes

• While I have not been released to complete a full strengths and


needs or risk assessment on my own, I have set in on CFT
meetings and/or reviewed cases with other social workers where
strengths and needs and risk assessments have been completed.

• When working with clients in their environments, I will treat


each situation differently and accordingly as every client’s
situation is different therefore there is not a one-size-fits-all
approach.
Competency 6.2

• Use empathy, reflection, and interpersonal skills to effectively


engage diverse clients and constituencies.
Relevant Activities or Tasks

• Student will practice empathizing with diverse clients at all


times.
• Student will engage with clients and effectively assess the client
using reflection, summarizing, and other interpersonal skills to
assess concerns.
Outcomes

• When working with clients, I always allow space and ample time
to talk and express concerns and feelings before interjecting
myself.
• As part of empathizing with clients, I try to promote self-
determination as my form of empathizing, while also
incorporating reflective listening and summarizing, or whatever
other interpersonal skills are appropriate for the situation.
