INTRODUCTION

 Double Sided Incremental Forming (DSIF) is the most flexible variant of

incremental sheet forming.

It uses two independently controlled tools to form a part from a

clamped sheet via the accumulation of small localized deformations.

The tool on the top side of the workpiece is generally named as the
master tool, while the tool on the bottom side is named as the supporting
tool or slave tool.

 One tool will be forming the geometry by generating localized

deformation while the other provides local support that enhances the
accuracy of components.

In this manufacturing process two tools are used to deform a metal
sheet into a predefined shape by following a prescribed toolpath.

DSIF process for a truncated cone.
CHARACTERISTICS

•Die-less forming process

•Part shape independent tooling

•Less deformation instability

•Reduces material thinning

•Highly flexible process

•Improved formability and

accuracy due to additional
support.

FORMABILITY AND DEFORMATION
The formability describe the ability to enable sheet deformation without
material failure.

The squeezing effect controlled by the supporting force improves

formability.

Although excessive contact pressure over deforms the workpiece and

reduces the formability.

Deformation Mechanisms are associated with Local bending of the sheet

around the contact point between the workpiece and the master tool.

Deformation are accompanied by squeezing effect due to the support tool

as well as shearing perpendicular and parallel to the tool moving direction.
FORMING FACTORS

• Tool Rotations

• Feed Rate

• Step Size

• Tool Movement Direction

• Compressive Stress

• Forming Force

• Squeezing Effect

Metal Forming in industry

ADVANTAGE
S
Die less process.

Less Lead time of process.

Low forming force require.

Smaller machine size require.

Available for any formable metallic

alloy.

Improved formability and accuracy than

conventional forming .

Tooling is part-shape independent with

negligible cost. Fig.4. Illustration of DSIF process
LIMITATIONS

Chances of sheet fractures

due to tool contact loss.

Limited Formability.

Geometrical Inaccuracy due to

excessive deflection of master tool.

Excess squeezing pressure reduces

the formability.

APPLICATIONS

DSIF is applicable to a wide range of materials including plastics,

titanium alloys, steel alloys, and aluminum alloys.
