LEAD
It is an opening paragraph that gives the audience the
most important information of the news .
A short sentence lead uses one word or a short phrase as a

teaser with the rest of the lead appearing later. This is often
considered gimmicky, so only use it now and then.
Types of Lead

It is meant to give a quick summary in as few


words as possible and is usually one sentence.
WHAT MAKES A
Rule #1: A straight news leadGOOD
should be LEAD?
a single paragraph consisting of a single
sentence, should contain no more than 30 words, and should summarize, at minimum,
the most newsworthy “what,” “where” and “when” of the story.
Rule #2: The lead’s first verb should express the main “what” of the story and should
be placed among the lead’s first seven words.

Rule #3: Don’t state the obvious.

Rule #4: Don’t cite the dictionary.

Rule #4: Don’t say anything is “right around the corner.”

SEC. 2. Declaration of Policy.
A student shall not be expelled or suspended solely on the basis of articles he or she has written, or
on the basis of the performance of his or her duties in the student publication.

Publication must be published by editorial board and publication staff


The Department of Education, Culture and Sports shall sponsor periodic competitions, press conferences
and training seminars in which student-editors/writers and teacher-advisers of student publications in the
elementary, secondary and tertiary levels shall participate. 

Funding for the student publication may include the savings of the
respective school's appropriations, student subscriptions, donations, and
other sources of funds.
MEDIA LAW
Freedom of Expression- Freedom of expression refers to the ability of an individual or group of
individuals to express their beliefs, thoughts, ideas, and emotions about different issues free from
government censorship

The Right to Information (Access to Information)The right to receive information is part of freedom
of expression. It gives you the right to receive information that other persons are willing to provide.
You also have the right to obtain at least some information about decisions of public importance
taken by the state administration
The Right to Privacy The Right to Privacy is the 12th in Human Rights law which asserts every
human’s right to privacy. This law clearly stated that, “no one shall be subjected to
arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attack
upon his honour and reputation”

Here in the Philippines, journalists follow the Philippine Journalists’Code of Ethics approved by the
Philippine Press Institute the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines and the National Press
Club in 1988
I. I shall scrupulously report and interpret the news, taking care not to suppress essential
facts nor to distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis. I recognize the duty to
air the other side and the duty to correct substantive errors promptly.

II. I shall not violate confidential information on material given me in the exercise of my
calling.

III. I shall resort only to fair and honest methods in my effort to obtain news, photographs
and/or documents, and shall properly identify myself as a
representative of the press when obtaining any personal interview intended for
publication.
IV. I shall refrain from writing reports which will adversely affect a private reputation unless
the public interests justify it. At the same time, I shall write vigorously for public access to
information, as provided for in the constitution.

V. I shall not let personal motives or interests influence me in the performance of my duties;
nor shall I accept or offer any present, gift or other consideration of a
nature which may cast doubt on my professional integrity.

VI. I shall not commit any act of plagiarism.

VII. I shall not in any manner ridicule, cast aspersions on or degrade any person by reason of
sex, creed, religious belief, political conviction, cultural and ethnic origin.

VIII. I shall presume persons accused of crime of being innocent until proven otherwise. I
shall exercise caution in publishing names of minors, and women involved in criminal cases
so that they may not unjustly lose their standing in society.

IX. I shall not take unfair advantage of a fellow journalist.


X. I shall accept only such tasks as are compatible with the integrity and
dignity of my profession, invoking the “conscience clause” when duties
imposed on me conflict with the voice of my conscience.

XI. I shall comport myself in public or while performing my duties as journalist


in such manner as to maintain the dignity of my profession. When in doubt,
decency should be my watchword.
GRAMMAR
RUN-ON SENTENCE SAMPLE
also known as fused sentences, occur when two complete sentences are squashed together
without using a coordinating conjunction or proper punctuation, such as a period or a semicolon.

Incorrect: Lila enjoyed the bouquet of tulips John gave her on prom night however she prefers roses.

Correct: Lila enjoyed the bouquet of tulips John gave her on prom night; however, she prefers roses.

FRAGMENT SENTENCE
is a sentence that is missing either its subject or its main verb. Some sentence fragments occur as
the result of simple typographical errors or omission of words.
Incorrect: Because of the rain.

Correct: Because of the rain, the party was canceled.
