Bones are rigid organs that make up


most of our skeleton. The human
adult skeleton is made up of 206
bones.
What makes up our Skeletal
System?

Bones also contain a tissue called


bone marrow that produces red blood
cells.
AXIAL SKELETON
The Axial Skeleton
includes:
 Skull
 Vertebral column
 Ribs
 Sternum
APPENDICULAR
SKELETON
The Appendicular Skeleton
includes bones of:
 Shoulder
 Arms
 Hands
 Hips
 Legs

CRANIAL BONES

SPINAL
COLUMN
Also called
vertebrae.
Irregular bones
that protects
the spinal
cord.
RIB CAGE
Consists of 12 pairs of
bones.
1st 7 pairs are called true
ribs.
5 pair are called false
ribs.
COLLAR BONE
-found in front of the
shoulder
SCAPULA

Shoulder bone
found at the
back of your
shoulder.
PELVIC
BONES
Supports the
lower part of
the body and
aid the
movement of
the legs.

Functions of the Skeletal System
1. Support – It provides the framework which
supports and maintains shape of the body. It gives
the body much needed support.
2. Protection – It protects the internal organ of the
body.
3. Movement – It provides an attachment for the
muscle which makes body movements possible.
4. Storage and Supply – It stores important minerals
like calcium and phosphorus and produces both
red and white blood cells.
