GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING
UNIVERSITAS NEGERI GORONTALO
INTRODUCTION

North Sulawesi is an area close to the earthquake source due to tectonic processes such as
active faults that cause geological phenomenon.
Gorontalo area is described as a strike-slip faults, namely the Gorontalo fault . This
structure is a strike-slip fault which is indicated by the shape of the coastline around
Tomini Bay which shows a shift in direction. Generally, earthquakes in Gorontalo that
occur in the fault zone are shown on the seismic map . The seismicity maps were created
using QGIS software. The earthquake maps are divided into two, the earthquake depth
map and the earthquake magnitude map.
This study aims to determine the seismic in the Suwawa Timur District from the
earthquake depth and magnitude data.

RESEARCH SITE
The research location is in
Suwawa Timur District, Bone
Bolango Regency, Gorontalo
Province with a total area of
103.28 Km2. Astronomically
Suwawa Timur is located at
0º41'10" - 0º25'02" North
Latitude and 123º13'02 " -
123º35'05" East Longitude.

Data Collection
This study uses earthquake data from the United States Geological Survey
(USGS) 1936 - 2019 and topographic maps based on the RBI.

Data Analysis
The analysis was carried out by making a seismic map of the Suwawa Timur
area. The map is based on earthquake depth and earthquake magnitude in
the study area. Then map the earthquake depth and magnitude of the
earthquake combined with zonation.
Results and Discussion
The location of this research consists of Qts,
Qal, Qpl, TQpv, Tets, Tmb, Tmbv, and
Tmtl.
The results of plotting the depth value on
the map show that the earthquake points in
Suwawa Timur are at the depth of shallow
earthquakes (0 - 70 km), and medium
earthquakes (70 - 300 km). It can be seen on
the map that there are red and yellow
earthquake points. Shallow earthquakes
usually originate from active fault
movement activity.

Seismicity map based on depth earthquake

Suwawa Timur Regency is dominated by
minor earthquakes and mild earthquakes .
The northern part has one of the magnitude
points of the moderate earthquake
category.The lithology condition is related
to the magnitude of the earthquake. The
lithology below the soft surface is at risk of
experiencing higher earth wave shaking
than compact rocks. Geological structure
also affects the magnitude value. The energy
emitted by the earthquake comes from the
area directly above the fault cause terrible
earthquake.

Magnitude-based earthquake distribution map

The magnitude of the earthquake
depth in the Suwawa Timur district is
clearly shown on the depth zonation
map. The map color scale shows the
value of the depth of the earthquake
where the color is light purple to blue
at the location within a depth range of
10 - 90 km (shallow earthquake), green
to orange with a depth value of 110 -
170 km (medium earthquake), yellow
to red with a depth value 190 - 310 km
(deep earthquake).

Earthquake depth zonation map

The middle part of Suwawa Timur
sub-district is dominated by minor
earthquakes (0.2 - 3.8). The north,
south, east and west are dominated by
mild earthquakes (4 - 4.8) and
moderate earthquakes (5 - 5.8). The
greater the magnitude for the north,
south, east, and west areas and the
lower magnitude part is influenced by
the location of the epicenter of the
earthquake magnitude, where the
energy of the earthquake propagates
and vibrates with each other .

Earthquake magnitude zonation map

Based on the results of the analysis and discussion carried out in
CONCLUSION : Suwawa Timur concluded the area has shallow earthquake points with a
depth (0 - 70 km), and medium earthquakes (70 - 300 km). Suwawa
Timur area dominated by minor earthquakes with strength (0.0 - 3.9),
mild earthquakes with strength (4 - 4.9), and there is one point of
moderate earthquake magnitude (5 – 5,9).
