ART OF İLLUMİNATİON (TEZHİP):

Tezhip, the art of illumination, is a bright


and appealing form of book decoration.

The word tezhip is derived from the


Arabic word for “gilding.”

It is a technique that uses crushed gold foil


to form patterns in various colors.

Müzehhip, müzehhibe.

ART OF İLLUMİNATİON (TEZHİP):

The art of ilumination has been practiced as


widely in the West as it has in the East.

In the Middle Ages in particularly it was widely


used to decorate Christian religious texts and
prayer books.

Gradually however, picture illustrations became


more popular, and illumination became
restricted to decorating the capital letters in
main headings.
MATERİALS OF TEZHİP:
Tezhip is made with the help of brushes made of sable
hair, materials such as gold, paint, gelatin, and mühre.

In the past, the müzehhips prepared the root and ocher


paint themselves. But today, the müzehhips can use a
variety of ready-made paints.
GOLD PAİNT PREPARATİON
The main ingredient in illumination is gold or paint.

Gold is used in a thin leaf prepared by beating it to an extreme


fineness.

The gold leaf is powdered in water and mixed with gelatine, and
then brought to the desired thickness.
STAGES OF PREPARATİON :
In the art of illumination, which is based on patterns,
patterns are primarily created with motifs, and there is
a wealth of motifs formed over centuries in this
culture.

Geometric motifs, naturalistic plant motifs, rumi,


hatayi, leaf, penç, zencerek, cloud, münhani as motifs
are used.
STAGES OF TEZHİP:
It is usually done by contours of the half or quarter
symmetrical pattern, then the patterns are painted
one by one.

Apart from gold, colors such as navy blue, red,


pink, yellow, black, orange, blue and green shades
are common in illumination.

Lastly, crochet is drawn, details such as scattering


and sweeping are added.
DIFFERENTIATION OF THE
ART OF ILLUSTRATION
• It can be said that it is possible to understand
the period to which it belongs by looking at
the color intensity of the works decorated with
Tezhip.

• Because the use of different colors was


preferred in different periods.

 In the past, it was mostly used on manuscript books and


edicts.

 But nowadays it is possible to see the art of illumination


everywhere.

 It also shows itself on architectural areas, furniture, fabrics


such as scarves and ties.
