Computer Integrated

Manufacturing
What is CIM

The use of computer-controlled machines and

automation systems in the creation of products is
called computer-integrated manufacturing.

manufacturing method that integrates multiple

technologies such as computer-aided design (CAD)
and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to produce
an error-free production process that eliminates
human labor and automates repetitive operations.
Important Role of Computer to Cim System

● Part and product design.

● Tool and fixture design.
● Process planning.
● Programming of numerically controlled
machines and material handling systems.
● Production planning.
● Machining.
● Assembly.
● Maintenance.
● Quality control.
● Inspection.
● Storage and retrieval.
What Are The Challenges Of CIM??

● Extended periods of downtime

● Idle staff
● Reduced production
● Increased lead times
● Customer dissatisfaction
● Reputational damage
● Loss of market share
Scope of Computer Integrated Manufacturing
•The ultimate goal of CIM is the integration of all the
enterprise operation and activities around a common data
collection During this situation, society of manufacturing
engineers (SME) introduces the CIM wheel,
•Outer layer constitutes of general management which
includes marketing, strategic planning, finance,
manufacturing management and human resource
management.
•The middle layer consists of three process segments:
product and process determination, manufacturing planning
and control, and factory automation.
•These process segments represent all the activities in the
design and manufacturing phase of a product life cycle taking
the product from concept to assembly.
•The center of wheel represents the third layer which
includes information resources management and common
database.
The Four Elements of the CIM

● Business functions
● Design process
● Design process
● Process control
Opportunity Of CIM

•CIM represents an opportunity to upskill the current

manufacturing workforce. Ultimately, CIM can benefit
manufacturing facilities two-fold:

1) By improving the overall production process.

2) By improving the skill set of the current workforce.
Benefits

● Reduced costs – i.e. the cost of direct and indirect labour

● Improved scheduling flexibility
● Reduced downtime
● Maintaining correct inventory levels
DISADVANTAGE

•Causing jobs losses

•Skills shortage
•High initial capital costs/investments due to computers,
robots, training of personnel
•Maintenance is complex, requires highly skilled
employees
Possible Threats in CIM

•Computer Error
•System Down
•Power Interruption
•DATA Privacy
•Internet Connection
ADVANTAGE

● Error Reduction
● Speed
● Flexibility
● Integration
IMPACT OF CIM
Impact on the Individual

The impact of automation on employment and unemployment

rates in the long run is controversial. The majority of studies in this
field have been contentious and inconclusive. Workers have lost jobs
as a result of automation, but population growth and consumer
demand for automation products have more than compensated for
these losses. Workers displaced by technology should be retrained
for other jobs, with the possibility of raising their skill levels in the
process, according to labor groups and many employers.
Impact on society

Automation has an impact on society as a whole, in addition to

individual labor. Automation has an impact on productivity, which is
a fundamental economic issue. A process' productivity is typically
defined as the ratio of output units to labor input units. Because of
gains in production rate and reductions in labor content, a properly
justified automation project will boost productivity. Productivity
advances have resulted in lower product pricing and higher societal
prosperity over time.
