WELDING

• What is Welding?
• Fusing metals together with heat and/or pressure

• Welds are executed according to comprehensive procedures that meet site and code requirements

• Successful welding relies on application of fundamental welding principles and procedures to job-specific
requirements

• Three phases in welding process:

1. Pre-weld planning and qualification
2. Weld execution
3. Post-weld inspection and testing
WELDING PARAMETERS

• Welding procedures satisfy needs of job-specific parameters

• Base metal characteristics
• Joint type
• Weld type
• Welding position

• Procedures specify how welder will execute requirements

1. Select appropriate welding process
2. Select electrodes
3. Set power supply current

• Execution and testing of qualified procedures shall always be performed by qualified personnel
WELD TYPES

• Fillet welds
• Most common weld type; requires minimum edge preparation
• Used to fill lap, corner, tee joint plate edges
• Filler metal cross section approximates right triangle

• Groove welds
• Edges shaped into groove to facilitate weld penetration
• Filler metal used to fill joint
• Grooves can be single or double sided
METAL JOINING PROCESSES

• Arc welding
• Oxy-fuel gas welding
• Brazing and soldering
• Other joining processes such as
-Resistance welding
-Stud welding
-Roll welding
-Metalizing
