Learning Tasks:
1. I can differentiate statistics and parameters.
2. I can show examples of statistics and parameters in actual studies
or investigations.
SLIDESMANIA
PARAMETER
● It is the characteristics used to describe a population. It is a
numerical value that states something about the entire population
being studied.
● Parameters are difficult if not impossible to obtain exactly. On the
other hand, each parameter has a parameter has a corresponding
statistics that can be measured exactly.
SLIDESMANIA.C

● The value of parameter is a fixed number.

SLIDESMANIA
STATISTIC
● It is the characteristics of a sample used to infer information about
the population.
● It is a numerical value that states something about a sample.

INTERESTING
FACTS
• A parameter measures something in a population.
• A statistic measures something in sample.
SLIDESMANIA.C

• Parameter : Population ( P : P )
• Statistics : Sample ( S : S )
SLIDESMANIA
You can follow two steps in telling the
difference between a statistic and
parameter:
Step 1: Ask yourself, is this fact about the whole population?

Sometimes that s easy to figure out. For small populations, you usually have parameter because the groups
are small enough to measure.
Examples:

○ 13 of the senators voted for the Reproductive Health Bill.

SLIDESMANIA.C

○ 40% of 200 Grade 11 students of Holy Child academy got below a 3 on a standardized test.

○ 30% of 120 workers at a particular bike factory were paid less than P36, 000.00 per year.
SLIDESMANIA
Step 2: Ask yourself, is this obviously a fact about a very large population? If it is, you have
statistics
Examples:

○ 60% of Filipinos still believe in superstition.

○ 45% teenagers admit that they have tried smoking for at least once for the past 12 months.

○ 30% of dog owners poop scoop after their dog.

Example 1:
Mariel wants to know whether high school
students understand bullying. She surveys 100
students from the high school asking about how
they felt being bullied. All of the students in
the high school were teenagers and 38% of the
students surveyed experienced being bullied.
