The document describes Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs pyramid from his 1943 work. The pyramid consists of 5 levels of needs ordered from most basic to most advanced: physiological needs, safety needs, belongingness needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. Each level must be substantially satisfied before progressing to meeting needs of the next level. The pyramid proposes that human motivation is based on wanting to progress through these levels of needs.
