Star categorization of the hotel have been
approved in India and also about the
organizations which are involved.
The need for a star rating is essentially to set the expectation level of the
travelers and also for other legislative purposes like government
subsidies. Globally, the standards and parameters to give the
accreditations vary from country to country.
In India HRACC(Hotels and Restaurants Accreditation Committee)
falling under the Ministry of Tourism ranks the hotels based on certain
parameters. That’s the official procedure, however getting the star
accreditations being the voluntary procedure, hoteliers often self-
proclaim their star ratings
• The operational hotels are broadly classified into two Star Category
Hotels: -
• 5 Star Deluxe, 5 Star, 4 Star, 3 Star, 2 Star & 1 Star
• Heritage Category Hotels: - Heritage Grand, Heritage Classic & Heritage
Basic

• The basic parameters on which the officials grant the star ratings are
number of rooms, size of bathrooms, air-conditioning details for guest
rooms, public areas, details of public areas like lobby/lounge; restaurants;
bar; shopping; banquet/conference halls; business center; health club;
swimming pool; parking facilities (no. Of vehicles), facilities for the
differently abled guests, details of Fire Fighting Measures/ Hydrants,
security-related features etc
One star Hotel

These hotels serve the purpose of having a simple accommodation without any frills and also it will be
economical for the guests. Often guests have a perception that one-star hotels won’t be clean and neat, but
there is no need to worry as these hotels have to satisfy the requirements to be a one-star hotel, which is way
better than hotels without ratings.

Some of the basic requirements for one-star hotels are as follows;


The minimum size of the bedrooms should be 120 sq.ft
 A clean change of bed and bath linen daily & between check-ins Toiletries should be provided to each
guests checking in Hot and cold running water available 24 hours
 At least one room for the differently abled guest and ramps with anti-slip floors in the entrance.
Should have minimum one dining room serving all meals. Room service not necessary. I
It is desired and necessary to have English speaking front office staff.

Two Star Hotel
• Typically two-star hotels are managed by the proprietors and have the
basic things to cater the requirements of the guests.
• Pricing ranges from 700 INR to 1500 INR.
• The above-mentioned requirements are applicable to two-star category
hotels as well.
• Two-star hotels across India • Delhi – Hotel Alpine Tree • Mumbai –
Hotel Aksa • Chennai – Executive Comfort Alwarpet • Kolkata – Hotel
Aura Kolkata
Three Star Hotel
• A great example of three-star hotels in the FabHotels chain. Lemon-tree brand, Red fox hotel
which is an economy type hotel is also an example for three-star hotels.
• Generally, the pricing ranges from 1000 INR to 2000 INR.
• Some of the requirements in three-star hotels other than the basic requirements are as follows;
The minimum size of bedroom excluding bathroom should be 140 sq. Ft 50% Air-conditioned
guest rooms should be there.
The minimum size of the bathroom should be 36 sq. Ft PC available for guest use with internet
access Parking Facilities should be present for all guests
Each bedroom door fitted with lock and key, viewport/peephole & internal securing device.
 One Multicuisine Restaurant cum coffee shop open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and 24 hr. Room
service.
Three-star hotels across India • Delhi – The Pamposh • Mumbai – Hotel Sai Palace Inn •Chennai –
Hotel Chennai Le Palace • Kolkata – Floatel Hotel
Four Star Hotels
• Fortune hotels chain in India is mostly four-star hotels. It’s more luxurious and
spacious than 3-star hotels.
• Some of the requirements apart from the basic facilities are as follows;
All the guest rooms should be air-conditioned. 2% of room block with a minimum of
1 suite room.
In 4 Star and above hotels, some rooms should offer bathtub options to guests.
In-room safe, Minibar or fridge is mandatory.
With regards to food and beverage, One Multi-cuisine Restaurant cum coffee shop
open from 7 am to 11 pm, one Speciality Restaurant, and 24 hr. Room service.
Four-star hotels across India Delhi – Park Inn by Radisson Mumbai – Peninsula
Grand Hotel Chennai – Hotel Raj Park Chennai Kolkata – Howard Johnson
Five Star Hotels
• These aren’t your normal hotels, they are paragons offering top-notch hospitality services.
• These are the epitome of luxury and sophistication. And are adjudged as world class in every
manner by coddling the guests.
• Some famous hotel chains are Lemon tree premier hotels and Park hotels in India.
• These are certain features which they possess other than the basic ones. One Multi-cuisine
Restaurant cum 24 hr.
• A coffee shop / all day dinner, one Specialty Restaurant and 24 hr. Room service.
• The minimum size of bedroom excluding bathroom should be 200 sq. Ft These hotels also may
have inhouse Fitness facilities, Beauty salon, Florist, Bookshop.
• Swimming pool and conference facilities are also some of the other facilities which 5-star hotels
possess.
• Five-star hotels across India Delhi – Lemon Tree Premier Bangalore – The Oterra Bengaluru
Kolkata -The Park KKolkat Jaipur – Clarks Amer
Heritage Hotels
• This category will cover hotel in Residences/Havelies/Hunting
Lodges/Castles/Forts/ Palaces built prior to 1950.
• The hotel should have a minimum of 5 rooms (10 beds).  General
features and ambience should conform to the overall concept of
heritage and architectural distinctiveness.
Heritage Classic/ Heritage grand
• This category will cover hotels in Residences/Havelies/Hunting
Lodges/Castles/Forts/ Palaces built Prior to 1935.
• The hotel should have a minimum of 15 room (30 beds).
• General features and ambience should conform to the overall concept of heritage
and architectural distinctiveness.
• The hotel should provide at least one of the under mentioned sporting facilities.
• professionally designed kitchen and pantry.
• Crockery, cutlery, glassware should be of high standard and in sufficient quantity
good quality cuisine and the food and beverage service qualified, trained,
experienced, efficient and courteous staff in service and clean uniforms
• The staff coming in contact with the guests should understand English
HRACC ( Hotel and restaurant approval and
classification committee)
• The Hotel & Restaurant Division is responsible for processing online applications and
granting project level approval to hotels under construction.
• The Hotel & Restaurant Division also classifies operational hotels under the star rating
system.
• Under this system, hotels are given a rating, from One Star to Three Star, Four and Five Star
with or without alcohol, Five Star Deluxe, Heritage (Basic), Heritage (Classic), Heritage
(Grand), Legacy Vintage (Basic), Legacy Vintage (Classic) and Legacy Vintage (Grand).
• Classification is done on the basis of inspection of hotels which is undertaken by the Hotel
and Restaurant Approval and Classification Committee (HRACC), set up by this Ministry.
• The Division also approves properties in other categories viz, tented accommodation,
apartment hotels, motels, Guest Houses, standalone restaurants, convention centres, Time
Share Resorts, Bed & Breakfast establishments, air catering units and restaurants and Online
Travel Aggregators.
