ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF

ETHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF Bidens pilosa

AGAINST Escherichia coli AND Candida
albicans.

NAME: KHAYUMBI O. BEDWIN

REG. NO: HSB215-0155/2016

SUPERVISOR: DR C. MUTORO
INTRODUCTION

• B. pilosa an annual plant from S. America found in tropical

regions.
• Commonly known as b.jack recorded as a weed.
• Can be used as food, spice, fodder and medicine(toothache,
wounds)
• Contains nutrients such as vit. A and C, iron and proteins.
• Current study is to determine its antimicrobial effects.
• Studies will be done on E.coli and C.albicans.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
• Man has natural enemies who pose danger to survival.
• Among which are pathogenic microbes that cause infections.
• Increased negative health trends with diseases such as
pneumonia, TB, candidiasis, typhoid.
• Food poisoning also a result of pathogenic microbes.
• Modern medicine trying to control but there is developed
resistance.
• Resistance that brings complications in treatments.
JUSTIFICATION
• Increased health deteriorations, increase need to find way to
better lives.
• Increased resistance increases need to find remedies of
boosting developed drugs.
• B.pilosa a medicinal plant can be used as remedy if studied.
• B.pilosa can be a good remedy because of less complications
in growth conditions.
• It is important to also find a positive use for the plant.
HYPOTHESIS AND OBJECTIVES
HYPOTHESIS
H0: The leaf extracts of B.pilosa do not have antimicrobial properties
against E.coli and C.albicans.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE
To determine the antimicrobial properties of the ethanolic extracts of
B.pilosa against E.coli and C.albicans.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
• To determine whether the leaf extacts have antimicrobial activity.
• To measure and compare the zones of inhibition to that of the control.
• To determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of the extracts.
STUDY DESIGN
SAMPLING AND STUDY AREA
• The leaves of Bidens pilosa will be collected from around
JKUAT and Gachororo farms.
• Bacteria will be sourced from the biochemistry lab while the
fungus will be sourced from the botanical lab.
• Leaves obtained will be cleaned and shade dried.
STUDY PROCEDURE AND METHODOLOGY
• Preparation of the plant extract.

METHODOLOGY
• Testing antimicrobial properties
Media Inoculation of Introduction of paper discs soaked
preparation microorganisms in the plant extract

Record observations Incubation at 37°c for

for zones of inhibition 24hrs

• Testing the MIC(lowest conc.that does not show growth)

Serial dilutions of the Addition of the serial Inoculation of the
plant extract prepared dilutions to media in microorganisms to the
different test tubes tubes

Observations made for tubes

Observations Incubation of the
that appear turbid and those
recorded tubes overnight
that are clear
DATA ANALYSIS

• Data obtained will be collected into excel worksheets

• Analysis will be done by one way ANOVA.
• Results will be presented in pictures, tables and graphs
