Forming Plurals of
Nouns
Singular - names one person, animal,
place or thing
examples : teacher, computer, dog, city

Plural - names more than one

person, animal, place, or thing.
We follow some rules in forming the
plurals of nouns.

● Most nouns form their plural by adding -s.

Examples:
teachers dogs
computers
● Singular Nouns that end in s, ss, sh, ch, or x
form their plural by adding -es.

Examples:
buses bushes boxes
glasses bunches
There is an exception to this rule, however.
If the ending -ch is pronounced as /k/. Add
-s rather than -es.

Examples:
stomachs epochs
● Nouns ending in consonant and y form their
plural by changing y to i and adding -es.

Examples:
city - cities diary- diaries
baby - babies
However, when the noun ends in a vowel and y,
the noun changes into plural form by adding -s.

Examples:
toys
boys
days
● Nouns that end in a consonant or a single
vowel, plus -f or -fe, change into plural form
by changing f or fe to -ves.

Examples:
knife - knives scarf - scarves
half - halves
But nouns that end in two vowels plus -f
form their plural by simply adding -s.

Examples:
chiefs briefs
● As a general rule, most nouns ending in o add
s to make them plural.

Examples:
zeros avocados pianos
● However, there are also nouns ending in o
which add -es to make them plural.

Examples:
tomatoes heroes mosquitoes
