MULTIMODAL TEXTS
• A text may be defined as multimodal when
it combines two or more modes

• MODES – include written language, spoken


language, and patterns of meaning that are
linguistic, visual, audio, gestural, and spatial.
DIFFERENT MODES:
1. Linguistic – comprising aspects such as vocabulary,
generic structure, and the grammar of oral and
written language
2. VISUAL
- comprising aspects such as color, vectors,
and viewpoint in still and moving images
3. AUDIO
- comprising aspects such as volume,
pitch, and rhythm of music and sound
effects
4. GESTURAL
- comprising aspects such as movement,
speed, and stillness in facial expression and
body language.
5. SPATIAL
- comprising aspects such as proximity,
direction, and position of layout
EXAMPLES OF MULTIMODAL TEXTS:

•Picture book
• A webpage
•A live ballet performance
•Multimedia texts can be delivered
via different media or technologies.
•They may be live, paper, or digital
electronic.
Paper – based multimodal texts

- include picture books, textbooks,


graphic novels, comics, posters,
infographics, and brochure
Live multimodal texts

- convey meaning through combinations


of various modes such as gestural,
spatial, audio, and oral language.
Example: dance performance, oral
storytelling, newscasting
Digital multimodal texts

- include film, animation, slide shows, e-


posters, digital stories, podcasts, and web
pages that may include hyperlinks to external
pronunciation guides or translations.
OPINION
- is a statement that involves the speaker’s emotion
and cannot be proven

Example:
The article about COVID-19 cases is the worst I’ve read
in a while.
ASSERTION
- a statement that is somewhat true and
somewhat false

Example:
COVID-19 cases in Zamboanga City are increasing
through contact with other inmates.
HOW TO IDENTIFY:
• Statements of opinion usually start with signal phrases
such as I think or I believe and have words like best,
worst, beautiful, outstanding or should.
• Statements of opinion have to do with one’s
preferences or emotions.
Examples:
Chocolate ice cream is the best flavor of ice cream sold
Ice cream sundaes should always come with
a cherry on top.

I think my outlook in life was changed by the


pandemic
HOW TO IDENTIFY:
• Statements of assertion do not start with a phrase I
think or I believe.
• Statements of assertion are considered as
declarations, as if they were true even though they
may not be.
