How to Enhance your Credibility
as a Speaker
1. References and cite your own Experiences
2. Highly credible authorities
3. Demonstrate that you have common
beliefs, attitudes, and values to your
audience
4. Well-organized speeches are more credible
than poorly organized speeches
5. The more sincere you are, the better
chance you have of changing your listener’s
attitude
Faults of Beginning Speaker

a. Apologetic Opening
b. Use of meaningless words and phrases
c. Jiggling or playing with a ball pen
d. Poor audience contact
e. Stammering or Stuttering
f. Being a copycat
g. Poor posture
h. Vague ideas
i. Expressionless face
j. Insensitivity to Audience’s feedback
Overcoming Speech Anxiety

Two types of Speech Anxiety:

1. State Apprehension
2. Trait Apprehension
State Apprehension-it is an anxiety you feel in a particular
settings or situations. Also known as Stage Fright
a. Physiological-clammy hands, weak knees, dry mouth,
trembling or even cracking voice
b. Psychological- mental block, vocal hesitation, non-
fluency, an internal voice that keeps telling you that
you’re messing up your speech

The knowledge that you are being evaluated by others


intensifies these anxious moments
Trait apprehension- refers to your level of anxiety as
you face any communication situation. You may
withdraw to interpersonal or public communication
Xenophobic-fear for public speaking
It is a fear of being laughed at by the audience due to:
• poor grammar,
• wrong pronunciation,
• poor gesture,
• uninteresting and irrelevant ideas for funny physical
appearance
