Projectile Motion

Projectiles
A projectile is an object upon
which the only force acting is
gravity.

If there were any other force acting

upon an object, then that object
would not be a projectile.

Air resistance is usually of a projectile.
assumed to be negligible.

☜ ☞
Oblique Projection

An object is which thrown upwards at an angle is a

projectile. It continues in motion by its own inertia and is
influenced only by the downward force of gravity.

☜ ☞
Horizontal Projection

An object also undergoes projectile motion, when thrown

horizontally and is acted upon by only gravity.

Horizontal and Vertical Motion

☜ ☞
Horizontal and Vertical Motion
When dealing with projectile motion, it is important to
deal with horizontal and vertical motion separately.

Horizontal Motion Vertical Motion

The horizontal velocity The vertical motion
remains constant uniformly accelerates
a = 0ms-2 a = g = 9.8ms-2
Use: Use:
Speed = distance / time Equations of Motion

Solving Problems (1)
Horizontal Projection
Horizontal Motion Vertical Motion
Use: Speed = distance / time Use: Equations of Motion

a = 0ms-2 a = g = 9.8ms-2
Horizontal speed Initial vertical velocity,
s = initial speed of the object u = 0ms-1

Solving Problems (2)
Oblique Projection
Horizontal Motion Vertical Motion
Use: Speed = distance / time Use: Equations of Motion

a = 0ms-2 a = g = 9.8ms-2
Horizontal speed Initial vertical velocity,
s = vcosθ ms-1 u = vsinθ ms-1

☜ ☞
Tips
1. An object at a maximum height, always has the
vertical velocity = 0ms-1
2. When asked to calculate the horizontal range of an
oblique projectile, the vertical displacement is usually
0m.
3. Choose which direction is positive at the start of the
question (e.g. upwards). Anything “upwards” has a
positive value and anything “downwards” has a
negative value.

Oblique Projection
Answer

• At maximum height, v=0ms-1 s=

• Choose upwards as positive u = 3sin30 = 1.5ms-1
• Vertical motion: use v = 0ms-1
equations of motion a = -9.8ms-2
t=?
