MIMAROPA is called the Southern Tagalog Region of the MINDORO

Philippines. It is designated as Region IV-B. The term

MIMAROPA is a combination of the names of its constituent ROMBLON

provinces Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan.

MIMAROPA’s arts and crafts depict the different aspects of
their culture. PALAWAN

MINDORO

Iraya basket
The Iraya-Mangyans of Mindoro are fond of making baskets with intricate pattern s and
designs
of humans, animals, trees and other objects. It is made of dried nito grass and forest vines,
meticulously and patiently woven to create these very unique baskets.

The art of the Mangyans displays their rich, artistic heritage. A variation of
ambahan is the urukay, which uses eight syllables instead of seven. It is
frequently written on bamboo tubes or slats.
MARINDUQUE
The Moriones Festival in Marinduque is a much awaited Lenten tradition that is
celebrated every Holy Week. “Morion” means masks that are made from wood or
paper-mâché, adorned with colorful shells, animal hairs, tassels and crepe papers.
People who act as Roman soldiers during the festival wear these masks together with
vest, capes, and wooden shields.

ROMBLON

Romblon is known not only for its fine marble products

but also for the beautifully woven mats and bags out of
romblon plants.

province of Aklan in Western Visayas, Philippines. It is considered the finest of
Philippine textiles mainly because of its delicacy and its natural creamy hue. It is
made of fibres from the inner layer of the leaves of the native pineapple plant of
the red bisaya variety (Ananascomosus).

Kapiz (capiz) shell is also an important material in the craft of Panay Island, particularly
in Aklan and Iloilo. Capiz shells are bleached and dried before being pressed or cut into
different shapes. These are formed into various craft products like plates, utility box,
chandelier, windows and among others

C. READINGS
Weaving is a primary form of arts and crafts in MIMAROPA and
Panay Island even before the Spaniards came to the Philippines. Panay
Island was once tagged as the “Textile Capital of the Philippines”.
Weaving from indigenous fibers such as jusi and piña became popular in
the latter part of 1 9th century despite the introduction of cheap
cotton cloth from the West that dominated the local textile industry.
