INTRODUCTION

The proper use and management of resources has become problematic in metropolitan
areas due to rapid population increase. Programs are therefore required, especially in
urban areas, to meet the needs of the growing population and provide conveniences.
Web-based solution solutions have been sought for these issues in the digital age that
we live in. The idea of a "smart city" came into existence with the growing use of
computers and the internet, when information about cities was translated into web-
based and artificial intelligence formats in order to improve city efficiency and meet
human needs. The terms smart tourism, smart cities and smart tourism
destinations have become extremely popular in the last decade.
SMART TOURISM
Smart tourism is physical tourism, social connections, state/organization resources and
tourism supported by efforts in a destination for gathering data from the human mind.
Key points for the consolidation of a smart tourism
State-of-the-art technological infrastructure, which guarantees sustainable development and promotes equal
accessibility.
Free internet access on the street and in public places.
Public electric mobility as an alternative to traditional private transportation.
Promotion of a more ecological and sustainable tourism.
Attention to health or security emergencies through mobile applications.
Real-time information for timely decision making, such as vehicle flows and public transportation incidents.
Facilitating the interaction and integration of visitors with their surroundings.
Innovative and interactive cultural activities, such as visiting monuments and museums with virtual reality.
SMART CITIES AND HOW ITS WORKS
What is Smart City?
A city equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment
through application of some smart solutions. (Public information, grievance redressal, electronic service delivery,
citizens’ engagement, waste to energy & fuel, waste to compost, 100% treatment of waste water, smart meters
& management, monitoring water quality, renewable source of energy, efficient energy and green building, smart
parking, intelligent traffic management system.)
How Smart city work?
A smart city uses information and communications technology to collect and measure conditions in
streets, buildings, transportation and the air. That means embedding sensors and other technology throughout a
destination to monitor and collect data for everything from water and traffic to energy usage. The data are then
communicated through wired and wireless connections, through what is becoming known as the Internet of
Everything (IoE) in which everything is inter-connected. Then the data are crunched or analyzed to help
decision-makers in government and business to make better decisions.
• As natural resources become increasingly limited, cities have been forced to
improve and minimize resource consumption, as well as lessen their influence on
the environment. This is where smart cities come in: places where technology
helps people by bridging the gap between sustainability targets and urban
development strategies.
• While most of the world has a lot of catching up to do, some cities are already on
their way to meeting the needs of the present and future with the help of Internet
of Technology.
• In the Smart City Index 2021, for the top ten smart cities worldwide, the first
was Singapore, followed by Zurich, Oslo, Taipei City, Lausanne, Helsinki,
Copenhagen, Geneva, Auckland, and Bilbao
THE NEED OF SMART CITIES

• The idea of smart city came into formulation owing to the need to accommodate

rapid urbanization of the age. Interest in smart cities continues to grow, driven by

a range of socioeconomic and technological developments across the globe. It is

due to the increasing number of smart cities that established suppliers from

energy, transport, buildings, and government sectors are moving into the smart

city market, while startups are addressing a range of emerging opportunities in the

same field.

SMART DESTINATIONS
The idea of smart destination derived from the concept of smart city, as technology has become an enabler
of development of tourism destinations ( Boes2015 ).Smart tourism destination is focused on e-tourism,
where the consumers are very familiar with new technologies, and use them permanently. It contains multiple
components, like reservations systems, social media, various communication and connection applications etc.
Smart tourism destinations are smart cities which utilize the information technology and innovations to
enable pleasure, and experiences for the tourist.
The list of destinations adopting a smart city approach is quickly multiplying:
Malta is becoming a smaryt city island.
Singapore is already there.
Seven cities in the U.S. are finalists in the Smart City Challenge: Austin, Columbus, Denver, Kansas City,
Pittsburgh, Portland and San Francisco.
Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City claims to be the world’s smartest, most sustainable eco-neighborhood.
India has a national program aiming for at least 20 Smart Cities throughout the country
